apoptosis

"apoptosis,"
the biology teacher explained,
"is basically cell suicide. if
there's nothing else the cell can do,
and it fears that its disease
will spread to others,
it will just kill itself
so that the other cells won't be
infected and die.
it's a last resort for a cell,
only used when there's nothing
left to lose. but hey, i mean,
it makes sense... the cell
doesn't want the other cells
around it to get hurt."
