You and Jesse sit at a table in the Starbucks that Blue told you to be at. Your body is still a little stiff from last night, so you try to subtly adjust your sitting position to ease the pain. You wait patiently for him and Ross to arrive. Jesse is sitting next to you, holding a black coffee in one hand and your hand in the other. You check your phone to see if Blue texted you. Nothing. You look up at the door when your hear it open. A boy walks in. He's about five foot two, pale, and thin. His most notable feature is his curly, sapphire blue hair that draws your gaze straight to him. He's holding the hand of another man. The other man is about six feet tall with straight red hair and glasses. You flinch when you realize who they are. Blue looks over at you and Jesse and smiles cheerfully. He pulls Ross by his hand over to your table. You stand up and smile. You extend your hand out for a handshake, but Blue pulls you into a tight embrace. You're taken a bit by surprise, as are Jesse and Ross, but you hug Blue as if he were an old friend. Blue pulls away from you and looks up at you with sky blue eyes as he smiles. "It's so great to finally meet you, {Y/N}!" He exclaims.
"Same here, Blue." You say as you smile back.
"Oh, just call me Finn. That's my real name," Blue-- er-- Finn says.
"Got it. Oh, this is my boyfriend, Jesse." You say, gesturing to Jesse. Jesse tips his hat. Ross flinches.
"Wait-- Jesse McCree!?" Ross asks in a deep, yet slightly dignified voice as he pushes his glasses further up on the bridge of his nose. "My mom used to work for Overwatch! Though I can't remember her callsign." Ross takes Jesse's hand and firmly shakes it. "Ross McNiel. It's an honor."
Jesse smiles. "Wait-- Yer Marie's kid? How's she doin' these days?"
Ross grins. "Mom's doing great! Still strict, as usual."
"Pull up a seat, kid. I gotta hear this." Jesse says as he grabs a chair from an empty table and drags it toward your table. Ross takes his seat and engages in a long conversation with Jesse. You and Finn watch in amusement as your boyfriends get along.
"Finn McNiel? Nice ring to it." You tease, turning to Finn. He jabs you in the ribs with his elbow like you're his sibling or his best friend.
"Shut up! I'm only nineteen!" Finn whines. You pause.
"Wait, really?" You say looking down at him.
"Yep. I turn twenty next month. Ross is already twenty."
You're speechless. Your boss, the billionaire, money-laundering, government-wanted Blue, is a teenager. Younger than you. You put a hand on the side of your head and let out a short "huh."
"Hey, c'mere and sit down!" Jesse calls out to you and Finn. You both sit at the table across from your boyfriends.
Finn's smile fades a little as he looks at you. "Now..." he says, "the reason I wanted to meet you is to say... uh... goodbye. Kinda."
You flinch. "What? Why?" You ask, worried.
Finn sighs. "I'm not going to be your boss anymore. I'm quitting. I want to start a new life. Go to college. Get a real job. Spend time with Ross." He says as he reaches over and holds Ross' hand, which is resting on the table. Ross holds Finn's hand lovingly. Finn looks back at you. "I just want to be a normal nineteen year old kid. I just wanna be regular old Finn Carlson. I hope you understand. I have a plane coming at midnight in three days to pick you up and bring you back to Ireland."
Your heart drops. You look at Jesse. His eyes are wide and his hand is covering his mouth. You look back at Finn.
"No... no, I don't want to leave..."
Jesse sits up, an expression of pure concern on his face.
"No, you can't do this. There has to be something else we can do. I can't lose {Y/N}, I just can't! I love her too much! Please, I--"
"I can quit!" You blurt out. The table goes silent. You continue. "I was no one in Ireland. Just a nickname in the news. When I came to the U.S. and met Jesse, I felt like a human being with emotions and the ability to love... Jesse makes me feel important." You look at Jesse and hold his hand. He's... crying. Just a little bit. He grips your hand tightly. You smile warmly at Jesse. "I love him."
Finn and Ross exchange glances, then Finn speaks up.
"I understand if you want to quit. That's your personal decision. Just like you two, Ross and I want to start a normal life together. You and Jesse probably want to be together for a long time, maybe get married or have a child."
You and Jesse flinch simultaneously. You look at each other.
Jesse shrugs. "It could work." He says. You blush and giggle.
"Well, Ross and I need to go. You can stay as long as you like in America." Finn says as he and Ross stand up from the table. "I hope we can stay in touch and hang out more often. I had fun today." Finn grins.
"It was an honor meeting you, McCree. You too, {Y/N}." Ross tells Jesse respectfully.
"Pleasure meetin' ya as well." Jesse says.
"Nice meeting you too, Ross." You say, smiling. "And, Finn, I'd love to hang out more often. Drive home safe." You say your goodbyes, exchange awkward hugs, and part ways. As Finn and Ross walk out of the Starbucks, hand in hand, you can see Ross fanboying outside and excited talking about his encounter with Jesse. Finn laughs with Ross and rests his head on Ross' arm as the two walk down the street. You can't help but smile at the two. You hope to one day reach that level of love with Jesse. You look out of the corner of your eye at him. He's sipping his coffee, his half-lidded eyes intently staring off into space. You just realize it, but he looks tired. No, he looks exhausted. Anxiety washes over you. Is he okay? Did he get enough sleep? Is something bothering him? Did you do something wrong? You decide to speak up.
"Jesse..." you mutter, "are you okay?"
He blinks slowly and looks at you. "Huh? Oh. Yeah, I'm good. I'm fine. I'm Mr. Wide Awake. Yep... that's me." He rambles for a few more seconds before letting out a long yawn. Now you're concerned.
"Jesse, do you want to go home?" You ask. Jesse nods. You both get up and make your way back to your apartment. The moment you unlock the door, Jesse walks past you without a word and collapses on the couch with a loud fwump. After a few seconds, Jesse begins snoring loudly. You sigh, still unsure of why he's so tired. You walk into the living room and sit down on the floor in front of the couch. Jesse is sound asleep. Aw... he looks so peaceful when he sleeps. You look to your left and see Jesse's left arm limply dangling off the edge of the couch. Slowly, as not to disturb him, you slip your fingers in the spaces between his. A perfect fit. You hug your knees to your chest with your free arm. You silently stay by his side while he sleeps, watching over him and keeping bad dreams away. Ironic, considering you are-- or were once-- a nightmare to many.
Not anymore.
