HELLO IM BACK FROM MY LITERAL SEVEN MONTH HIATUS FROM THIS BOOK IM SORRY.
In all seriousness, I am sorry for leaving so suddenly. If you've been looking at my profile, you can see that I've been working on FOUR books at a time. This one, a book I recently completed, a book still being written, and an unpublished original project! So if you're waiting for a new update, stop by my profile and have a look around. Who knows, you might find something you like! Without further fanfare, on with the chapter! You and Jesse walk into the building, which appears to be a lab of some sort. There are maps, important looking documents, and empty jars of peanut butter scattered around the room. A tire swing hangs from the ceiling by a rope. Your steps echo through the hallways as you survey the environment. All of a sudden, there's a blinding flash of blue light that disorients you. You rub your eyes and look at Jesse to see if he's okay, but you're shocked about what you see.
A girl appears out of nowhere. Literally. Before you can fully understand what the fuck just happened, she throws her arms around Jesse.
"McCree!" She shouts, giggling and hugging your boyfriend.
Jesse regains his balance and hugs her. "Hey, Lena! Been a while, huh?" Jesse chuckles, hugging the girl. You assume they've been friends for a long time.
Once the girl is still and no longer a human-sized motion blur, you can get a good look at her. Her short, brunette hair is messy and wind-blown. Her big, brown eyes are covered by orange goggles that match the color of her skintight orange leggings. She wears a brown short-sleeved bomber jacket with a pilot's patch sewn into the left shoulder. A strange device that gives off a blue glow is strapped to her chest. Her smile is wide and her enthusiasm fills the entire room. She looks so happy to be alive, you can't help but smile along with her.
Jesse lets go of the girl and holds your hand in his. "Lena, this is my girlfriend, {Y/N}. She'll be stayin' here with me." He says.
"Hiya! My name's Lena 'Tracer' Oxton!" Lena says in a cheery British accent, reaching her hand out for a handshake.
"Nice to meet you, Lena." You say as you shake the girl's hand.
"So..." Jesse begins, "how's life treatin' ya, Lena?"
"Things have been great! I've been getting used to the Chronal Accelerator, reconnecting with society and my old life, even got myself a girlfriend!" Lena exclaims.
"'Bout time!" Jesse laughs. "Who's the lucky gal?"
"Her name is Emily. She--"
Lena is cut off by someone talking behind her.
"Oxton. What's the problem?" A voice deeper and more gravelly than Jesse's inquires.
Lena turns on her heels toward the voice's source and salutes. "Sir!" She exclaims.
Curious and confused, you and Jesse look where Lena is looking.
A man walks from the shadows. The red glow of his visor needs no introduction. He's the American vigilante known as Soldier: 76. You've looked up to him for so long. You can't believe you're in the same room as him, let alone that he was part of Overwatch!
"Morrison!" Jesse exclaims, slightly taken aback. "Almost didn't recognize ya."
Morrison? Hang on... Soldier: 76 is Overwatch Strike Commander Jack Morrison!?
Soldier: 76 approaches Jesse. The two men make eye contact.
"So... you're still keeping up this cowboy thing?" Soldier: 76 sighs and crosses his arms, like he and Jesse had discussed this many times before. "Thought this was just a phase."
"Nice seein' ya too, Jack." Jesse chuckles.
Soldier: 76 turns to you. "McCree, who's this woman?"
You stand up straight to make yourself look confident. "My name is {Y/N} {L/N}, s-sir."
"My girlfriend..." Jesse smiles nervously, as if awaiting approval.
Soldier: 76 gets a better look at you and extends his hand to you. "Jack Morrison, Strike Commander."
You shake his hand, trying to maintain composure. You guess it's like meeting Jesse's dad. Except his dad is someone you've looked up to your entire career. You assume it's just because you're nervous, but Soldier— or Jack seems suspicious of you.As more and more members of Overwatch walk into the lab and exchange heartfelt greetings, you begin to realize that this is less of a strike force and more of a family. You meet lots of people that are close to Jesse. Is this what a family is like? You're starting to like it.
Later on, Jack offers to show you and Jesse to your quarters. You both agree and follow him. Once you get to the door, Jesse takes your bags and brings them into the room, leaving you and Jack alone in the hallway. You barely glance at Jack before he wraps his hand around your throat and pins you against the wall, your feet dangling above the floor.
"I know damn well who you are, '{Y/N}.' I know you're the Whisper Killer." Jack mutters through gritted teeth. "I swear to God, if you're with Talon, I'll kill you myself before you can even look back at Jesse in remorse. Understood?"
You grasp at Jack's arm and nod in a panic, starting to lose consciousness, choking and gasping for air. The door opens, and Jack drops you. You grip the wall and cough violently, breathing heavily. Jesse walks out and sees you. He instantly runs over to you and holds you up, concerned for your wellbeing.
"What happened!?" Jesse exclaims. "Are you okay!?"
"She just got lightheaded and fell over." Jack calmly states. "Does this normally happen? She should see Dr. Ziegler about it."
That lying motherf...
Jesse puts his hand on your cheek and looks into your eyes. "{Y/N}, you okay, pumpkin?"
"I'm... alright..." you lie with a hoarse voice. "I just need to sit down."
Jesse helps you into your quarters and onto the bed. He grabs a glass of water from the bathroom and gives it to you, his chivalry making you smile. Jesse looks over at Jack, who spectates from the hallway.
"Ya think you could get the Doc over here to check {Y/N} out?" Jesse asks. Jack nods and walks out of sight.
A while later, there's a soft knock on the door. The door opens, and a woman stands in the doorway. Her golden blonde hair is pulled back into a ponytail, and a long white lab coat is draped over her beige pencil skirt and aqua turtleneck sweater. She carries a feeling of calmness and positive with her. She smiles at you and Jesse.
"It's good to see you again, Jesse!" The woman exclaims happily. "And you must be {Y/N}." The woman approaches you and shakes your hand. Up close, you realize she's very, very pretty.
"Doctor Angela Ziegler, Battlefield Medic. It's a pleasure to meet you." She smiles. Your cheeks begin to feel hot, and you don't understand why.
"Nice to meet you too, Dr. Ziegler," you say.
"Oh, Angela is just fine, dear." She giggles. "Now, what seems to be the problem?"
"She just got lightheaded and her voice was shot," Jesse explains, sitting on the bed next to you. Angela places her soft, delicate hand on your forehead.
"Do you have a history of any medical problems that might have caused this to happen?" She begins to feel around your neck. You shake your head. Angela's eyes travel to the open case that holds Clover. "Ah, so you're a sniper?"
"Yeah," you say, "I've been doing it for years."
"Well, it's good to have another sniper on the force." Angela smiles at you. You flinch.
"On the force? What's that supposed to mean?" You exclaim.
"You came here to join Overwatch, right?" Angela looks at you, confused. You think for a minute. Joining Overwatch could be a fresh start for you. You told yourself that this could be an opportunity to start a new life and put a life of murdering in cold blood behind you.
"I, uh... came here to stay close to Jesse, but I guess I'll consider it." You smile at Angela. Jesse looks at you and utters a pleasantly surprised chuckle.
"Ya never told me you were lookin' to join!" He wraps his arm around you.
"In that case, I can perform more of a routine checkup when you get your physical done to join," Angela says as she stands up straight, "but until then, I look forward to when we meet again."
As Angela walks into the hallway, she stops and salutes someone before walking off. Before you can realize that both you and Jesse are trying to look into the hallway to figure out who it is, an older woman walks into view. The moment Jesse sees her, he stands up from the bed, his expression shocked.
"A-Ana..." he stutters, walking over to the woman, "we thought you were dead..."
"Jesse, I'm sorry I didn't tell you." The woman, who you assume to be Ana, sighs and puts her hand on his shoulder. Jesse removes his hat from his head and places it on his chest, tilting his head down.
"It'll be an honor fightin' by your side again, Captain Amari."
"You've always been quite the charmer, Jesse." Ana chuckles as the two share an embrace, similar to how a mother would embrace her son. They must've been close during Overwatch's golden years. Ana looks over at you, smiling.
"And you must be the {Y/N} I've been hearing so much about. It's about time Jesse got a girlfriend." She walks over to you and shakes your hand. For an old woman, she has a surprisingly strong grip. Getting a closer look at her face, you recognize her from your research.
"You're Captain Amari, right? You're a big inspiration to me. It's an honor." You smile.
"So you're a sniper too? How long have you been training for?" Ana smiles.
"Twenty-eight years."
"And how old are you?"
"Thirty six. I started when I was eight."
"Eight? Even I didn't start that young!"
You and Ana chat for a bit about sniping, until she asks you something. "So, how did you and Jesse meet? I need to know how he met his first real girlfriend."
You look over at Jesse, who's nervously rubbing the back of his neck. "Ana..." he groans like a teenager being embarrassed by his mom in front of his friends.
"Well," you begin, grinning, "I had just moved to the US from Ireland that day. I was fresh off the plane, some of my luggage still in my arms. It was late, I was tired, so I'm like 'Hey, why don't I stop by the local bar?' And who was there? None other than Jesse McCree. We introduced ourselves and he bought me a drink, welcoming me to the US. Then, three bad looking guys walk in and say that they're gonna take Jesse in. I panic, I grab one of Jesse's flash bangs, disorient the chancers, and we leg it outta there and back to my apartment."
Ana chuckles at your retelling of events. "Is that true? If not, you might be better at telling stories than Reinhardt!"
"I can verify." Jesse raises his hand. "It's all true. Every word."
"Captain Ana Amari, please report to the East Wing." Athena announces.
"I hate to cut things short, but I have to go. It was nice meeting you, {Y/N}." Ana turns to the door, but looks back at Jesse. "Jesse. Treat this girl with respect."
"Yes, ma'am." He smiles and salutes to his Captain as she leaves the room. The door closes and Jesse slumps down on the bed, resting his head on your lap. "So, ya like it here yet?"
"Yeah, the people here are..." you hesitate when you think about Jack, "...interesting."
"Just wait until ya meet the rest."
