Hi, everyone! Luci here. Before this chapter starts, I just wanted to let you know that school is starting up for me soon. I'm supposed to start high school on the 31st (uncomfortably close to my birthday on September 3rd), so that means I won't be able to update that often anymore. I know, that's sad. But I'll really try to work on this as much as possible! Anyway, please leave a comment, vote for this chapter, consider following @LucilleThePlaywright, and I hope you enjoy! Love you all!
CRASH!!
You wake up with a start to the sound of shattering glass. The apartment is completely dark, aside from the blue light radiating from a computer screen in your bedroom. You apparently slept through the entire day with Jesse and it's the middle of the night, but you have no perception of time or what planet you're on. You look around for the source of the shatter. The couch is empty. Did someone break in? You get up off the floor as fast as your tired, confused body can handle and grab a knife from the kitchen. You slowly make your way to your bedroom, expecting to find an intruder. You find something even worse. You find Jesse sitting on the bed next to his laptop, a shattered glass of water at his feet. His face is buried in his hands. Without thinking, you drop the knife and run over to him, the broken glass crunching under your shoes.
"Jesse! What's wrong!?" You shout, grabbing his shoulders. He looks up, face red and eyes puffy, like he's been crying. He lets out a wordless hiccup and looks at a video playing on the laptop. You watch the video. It's a man-- no. Is that a talking gorilla? You blink in bewilderment, but continue watching the video. The-- ahem-- gorilla begins talking.
"Thirty years ago, the Omnics declared war. The nations of the world had no answer, until they called upon a small group of heroes. Overwatch was created to rescue humanity from the Omnic Crisis. We became the greatest champions of peace and progress mankind has ever seen! You were chosen because you had powers and abilities that made you... You joined because you... You already know this. Look, the people decided they were better off without us. They even called us criminals! They tore our family apart. But look around! Someone has to do something! We have to do something! We can make a difference again. The world needs us now more than ever! Are you with me?"
You gasp. You look at Jesse. He's wiping tears away from his eyes. You have so many questions, but you can only ask one. "Why are you upset? This seems like a great opportunity!"
Jesse sighs. "The controversy. I was part of Blackwatch, Overwatch's covert operations division. The head of Blackwatch, Gabriel Reyes and Overwatch's Strike Commander Jack Morrison had a fallin' out. Reyes used Blackwatch, along with me, to sabotage Morrison. I couldn't handle it, so I left. Went off the grid for a few years. But... now that sonuva bitch Reyes is finally dead..." Jesse pauses, lifting his head up slightly, like he just realized something. "There's no more Blackwatch." Jesse reaches over and pauses the video as he stands up. "I need to think about this for a while." He mutters contemplatively, grabbing his phone and wallet from the bedside table. "I'm goin' to the bar. Just need some time alone."
You frown. "Okay... call me if you need me to pick you up. I don't want you walking home alone. I love you."
"Love ya too." Jesse says as he kisses your cheek. You wrap your arms around him and gently kiss his lips.
"Please don't get too stressed out about this, Jesse. I'm worried about you. If you need me, I'm always here." You tell him, stroking his hair. You let go of him and he walks out the door and out of the apartment. You sigh and begin to clean up the broken glass on the floor. It's a bit safer to pick up with your bare hands but a lot more difficult because you stepped on it so many times that it's now the consistency of sand. You sigh and get the broom by the front door. You go to grab the handle, but you hear talking from the other side of the door. It's Jesse. He's on the phone. You silently press your ear against the door to listen to his conversation.
"Winston, I got your message. Just got a couple 'a questions for ya before I commit. So... Blackwatch's disbanded for good, right? Thought so. And... listen... I got this girlfriend now... Heheh, thanks. She's beautiful. Her name's {Y/N}. We've been together for a while now, and I really do think I have somethin' special with her. Do ya think she-- Yeah, that was what I was gonna ask. Really? If I decide to rejoin, you're not gonna regret this. Anyway, I'm headed to the bar. Yeah, I know it's 2 A.M. in my time zone. It's never to early for a drink." Jesse's voice starts to fade as he walks down the hallway away from the door. "So what if I like drinkin' alone?"
You lift your ear from the door, thinking about what Jesse and Winston were talking about. Is Winston the talking gorilla in the video? What was Jesse going to ask? Why were they talking about you? You grab the broom and dustpan and begin sweeping up the glass and throwing it away. You can't help but think. You finish cleaning, change into your pajamas and climb into bed. While trying to fall asleep, a thought keeps plaguing your mind.
"What if Overwatch could be a new life for me?"
Without thinking, you sit up in bed and reach for Jesse's laptop. You open the browser and begin searching for information about Overwatch. You find so much information. Blackwatch, Ecopoint: Antarctica, the Slipstream, the Deadlock Gang, Talon, the murder of Gérard Lacroix, Watchpoint: Gibraltar, the explosion at Overwatch's Swiss Headquarters, Jack Morrison, Gabriel Reyes, Ana Amari, Watchpoint: Grand Mesa, the United States' Soldier Enhancement Program, Doomfist, it's almost endless. Pages and pages, articles and articles. You find photographs of Overwatch in its golden years. Photos of battles and award ceremonies. You can even spot Jesse in a few of them. You hear the front door unlock. You feverishly clear the recent search history, close all your tabs, shut Jesse's laptop, and lay down in bed, your back facing the door to your bedroom. You hear the bedroom door creak open. You see Jesse's shadow out of the corner of your eye, standing in the doorway. You pretend to sleep as he slides into bed next to you and spoons you. You can hear him faintly whisper to you, "I have big news to tell you in the morning." You almost feel like hopping out of bed and asking what's going on, but you don't. You decide to give him the satisfaction of telling you in the morning. You feel Jesse's heartbeat slow to a gentle rhythm as he falls deeper into sleep. Having him by your side is calming, so you close your eyes and contently fall asleep.
