"James Michaels, for the crimes of theft, I hear by sentence you to death" I looked at my dad as he was walked into an air lock. My mother stood beside me, not an ounce of emotion in her eyes. I walked up to Chancellor Jaha tugged on his arm. He looked down at me.
"Please don't float him. He didn't mean to!" I begged him. He crouched down next to me. Placing his hands on my tiny arms.
"I'm sorry Athena, your father committed a crime and as our laws state he needs to be punished." He stood up as I cried. I ran to the door, hands slamming on the glass.
My father looked at me tears in his eyes. "Be brave now my little warrior! You need to look after your mother for me. Know that I will always love you. May we meet again!" He stood up and turned to Kane. "Look after her Kane. This will be hard for her and her mother. So please do what you can. Protect her for me!"
Kane nodded at his friend as he came over. I felt his hands on me, turning me away from my father. He picked me up and placed me against his side. I wrapped my little arms around his neck and placed my forehead on his cheek. Tears free falling down my chubby face. "Athena look away! You don't need to see this." He told me. I shook my head. I wanted to see my father. I needed to see him. I needed to look at his face and embed his features into my mind. I saw Jaha nod to Shumway. The outer doors open and my dad was sucked out into space. I burst out crying!
"Daddy!" I screamed reaching out my arms for him. Kane simple turned, carrying me out of the room. As he walked past my mother he turned to her.
"You need to get yourself sorted Maria. If not for yourself, then for Athena." With that he walked away carrying me to his flat. He laid me down in the spare room, which he had decorated for me. I sobbed into my teddy as Kane sat next to me, brushing my hair back soothing me. "If you get scared at any point you come to me, okay?" I nodded at him. "For tonight you can stay here. Let mummy come to terms with what's happened alone." With those final words I fell asleep.
A few years later!
I was in the flat I had always shared with my parents. I was tidying up the various bottles of alcohol my mother had stashed away. "What do you think you're doing?" She snarled at me as she walked to the kitchen.
"I'm tidying. You never know we might have a random check." I was actually hoping we would, that way I'd get her out of my life for good.
"The only way we would get checked is if you've opened your big mouth. Just like you did before your father go floated." I turned to her slammed the cup I was hold down.
"I didn't get dad floated, you did!" I jabbed a finger in her face. "If it wasn't for your drinking and dire need for painkillers, dad wouldn't have stolen the rations, he wouldn't have got caught. He did it for you. To keep you from turning into a monster. Looks like it didn't work so well." Slap her hand contacted with my face whipping my head to the side. I looked at her as tears filled my eyes. "All you've done since dad died is hit me, yell at me and blame me. You're suppose to be my mother. You're suppose to love me, protect me. Yet you don't! I wish you had been floated and not dad." Whack my head was smashed into the wall. I looked at her with pure anger in my face. I stood up pushed past her and ran out the flat.
I ran down the corridor straight to Kane who was talking to a woman called Abby. As I approached they saw me, tears streaming down my face, holding myself against the wall. As I got to them Kane looked at my head.
"Athena! What happened? You're bleeding?" I looked at him and then Abby. Not wanting Abby to know what had really happened I lied.
"I fell when cleaning." I saw Kane look at me with questioning eyes. All these years he knew when I was lying. He knew I was scared of what would happen if people found out my own mother was hitting me.
"Let's get you seen to okay sweetie?" Abby place an arm round my shoulder and guided me to the infirmary. I sat down on a bed as she cleaned the cut on my head. "I'm afraid you'll have a black eye in the morning." I shrugged at her.
"It's ok!" I said. "I've had worse. Believe me!" She looked at me with concern on her face.
"Athena!" She placed the cloth on the table. "Since you were six you've been in the infirmary quite a few times. Sometimes with burns, broken bones, cuts. I'm starting to wonder if this is being done deliberately. No one can be as clumsy as you!"
"You'd be surprised." I laughed as I jumped of the table. "Thank you Dr Griffin." She nodded at me as I walked out. On the way I saw some painkillers. I looked behind me and saw that no one was looking. I swiped them and hid them in my pocket.
I walked to my flat. Opening the door I could hear Kane shouting at my mum. "She's your daughter Maria. You're suppose to protect her, not hit her."
"I didn't hit her. She fell" my mum was really good at lying. Sometimes she even had me fooled.
"You've been drinking again haven't you?" I heard a bottle being picked up or being put down I couldn't be sure. "How much longer is this going to go on for? Sooner or later the council will find out what you're doing, and they won't be lenient." I pushed open the door further. "Athena!" I glared at him.
"I told you I fell. Now please leave." With one last look at my mum and then me he left. "Here I got you some painkillers. Hopefully they will help you!" She nodded and snatches them from my hands. "Thanks Athena!" I mumbled. I walked to the kitchen to continue cleaning up when a knock on the door sounded.
My mother opened it. "She's in the kitchen." I heard her slur, damn it random inspection. I walked out and was met with two guards.
"How can I help you?" I asked politely.
"Athena Michaels." I nodded. "I'm arresting you for theft." My eyes lost all emotion. Just like my mothers did when my father died.
"What?" My mother looked at me. "Like father like daughter I suppose." I glared at her. How dare she bring my father into this. I didn't fight the guards I went willingly.
"Most people run when we arrest them!" One guard told me
"I'm not most people." I turned to him. "Thank you!" I said causing him to look at me confused. I shook my head not saying anymore.
That night I was thrown in the skybox. A cell on my own. I could hear others talking, whispering to each other wondering what I had done. A few days in my door flew open. "Athena Michaels." I looked up to see a guard with a grin on his face. I nodded and he pulled me up and marched me out the room. "We're going to the recreation room. Thought it might help with all the aggression."
I looked at him. "What aggression? I came in willingly." He just smirked at me. We entered the room and I saw two other guards, no inmates. What the hell is going on I thought. One of the other guards grabbed my wrist and tied it to the wall. I tried to pull away when the other guard tided my other wrist up. "What are you doing?" I asked with fear on my voice.
"Just having a bit of fun." The guard who brought me out said. The smirk not leaving his face. "Now Athena! He pulled out his baton. My eyes widened when I realised what he was planing to do. "Be a good girl, try not to scream." He hit me with the baton, electricity shot through the body I screamed."
