A few months passed by and it was already May 1995. A month ago it was the boys' 2nd anniversary. Time passes fast... I remember that year I didn't believe in their success, but I was wrong. Even though they are not that popular, they are doing so well. The Backstreet Boys are gonna fly to Sweden to record a new song in June.
It is May 27th and yesterday was the premiere of 'Casper'. Right now I'm in a hotel in Los Angeles waiting for my driver to come and drive us to the airport. I can't wait to go back to Orlando. A lot of people recognize me here and it's always nice to return to my quiet neighborhood.
"I talked to your manager yesterday, Karla." My mom told me.
"Maybe it's better for you and your career to live here."
Well, their thoughts were accurate. It would be better for me to live in Los Angeles, but I don't wanna leave Orlando.
"They have better acting schools here and it would be easier for you to film and go to premieres."
Also true. Sometimes I spend most of my time in LA filming movies. I sighed. My manager and mom were right but I don't wanna leave Florida.
"I don't want to leave Orlando, mom." I told her.
"All my friends, Brian and the boys are there."
"Brian will soon move out too. His band will start going on tours and you won't see them even if you are in Orlando." She looked at me with a sad expression on her face.
"I'll move out when I'm older. For now I wanna live in Orlando." I told her and she nodded accepting my decision.
----
"Nick's not going to record the song with us." Told me Brian one day before his flight to Sweden.
"Why?" I was surprised. Why wouldn't Nick go record a song with them. Brian just laughed and didn't answer my question, leaving me wondering what happened.
Was it something bad? No it couldn't be something bad, because Brian was laughing.
----
The next day when my Brother and the boys without Nick left, I decided to go to the Carters' house which was near and talk to my friend. I thought about what could have happened to him during the night.
I knocked on the door and his mom answered it.
"Oh hi, Karla." She smiled warmly. "Come in." She made a gesture with her hand for me to enter. I smiled at her and entered the house closing the door behind me.
"Nick and Bobbie are upstairs in their rooms. I'll go and prepare you something."
"Thank you." I said before Nick's mom went into the kitchen.
I climbed the stairs that led upstairs and approached Nick's room. I knocked on the door and heard a voice:
"Come in!" I knew it was Aaron's straight away.
I opened the door and saw Aaron playing with some toys on the ground.
"Karla! Hi!" He smiled at me.
"Hi Aaron." I smiled back and sat on the floor next to him. Before I could say something else he asked:
"Are you looking for Nick?"
I slightly nodded and Aaron put a mischievous smile on.
"He has some problems right now." The eight-year-old whispered and looked at Nick's part of the bedroom.
The Carter brothers' room was divided into two, kind of way. There were two wooden staircases that led to each side. When you climb up the small stairs there's something like a balcony with a bed and a bit of space around.
"He's upset about not going to record the song." Aaron whispered to me again.
Well, it was obvious that Nick was upset. The question was "Why?"
"Nick?" I called him but no one answered.
"Nick!" I said a bit louder. "It's me Karla!"
Soon a head with blonde hair and blue eyes popped out from the top of the little "balcony". Nick, though, didn't say anything.
"Can I talk to you?" I asked.
I saw Nick shaking his head 'no'.
"Please, can you tell me why didn't you go record the song?" He shook his head again blushing a bit.
"Okay, I'll go ask Bobbie. I'm sure she knows why. Or Aaron." I turned my head to his brother who was holding back his laugher.
Nick shook his head again faster, but this time showing me not to ask his siblings about it.
"Okay." I said. "So will you tell me?"
The boy sighed and started climbing down the stairs. Now fifteen-year-old Nick had grown up a lot and had become more handsome and a lot taller. I looked so small next to him and I was already 14.
Nick gestured for me to get out of the room then he followed me. We entered to an empty room and he sat on the bed leaving me still wondering about what was happening.
"So?" I asked.
"That's why!" He said and looked upset.
I didn't really understand what he meant by that, but his voice sounded pretty different than usual. His high voice was now mixed with some cracks.
"What do you mean?"
Nick looked at me as if I was stupid. He pointed out with his hand to his throat and mouth.
"Oh." I giggled. Now I understand why Brian found it funny. His voice was changing. Well, sometimes I'm grateful I'm not a boy.
"Because of that I can't sing." Nick looked at me. I was giggling and he sent me a annoyed look.
"I'm sorry." I chuckled. "I won't make you talk, because I bet this topic's pretty embarrassing for you." I smirked knowing that this will embarrass him even more.
I was right. His skin turned into a pinkish color.
----
After spending the afternoon in the Carters' house talking to Bobbie and telling Nick stories (because he didn't want to talk) I returned back home to see my mom cooking dinner. It smelled delicious, as always.
I got upstairs to my room and put on the TV. I played MTV and danced to some jams that were playing.
