Eight years after mom got that letter, we'd moved to a small town in Connecticute, named Wallyford. That whole summer in a new apartment was very awkward, especially when Uncle John, or as mom has us call him George, visits us. We all slowly, and in our own strange ways came to something short of peace to what happened that day. The only thing that no one asked, is what was in the letter. We've all just taken the initiative , that it was not a comfortable topic to bring up to mom any longer.
Now, my first day at the second high school I've transferred to in this town. Johnny is already in college, at Quinnipia College, studying early childhood education. Mary-Ann or Ann we call her nowadays is now 14 since just yesterday, going into her freshman year. While I, am going into my second year as a senior. I'm not a slacker, I was actually top of my class at one point, I just missed a lot of classwork, and was out too much from being in the hospital for awhile. But I'll save that story for later, and start with why my mom had us switch schools from last year. starting with the last day of school for me at Leeman Hill High. My class was practicing, and racing around for graduation while I was talking to my principal with my mom and translator Julia, about having to repeat a year after missing so many days, and not getting my work done.
Principal Jones: I understand that you didn't want to miss all of those days, but its too late now.
WIWTS: But I was top of my class for two years straight!! Probably smarter than half the kids graduating...
Me: *slides past report cards across the principal's desk*
Mom: These are Tyler's report cards from the last couple of years showing that he was top of his class, high honor, even when he needed his translator for most of his classes!!
She was furious that week, the news of me not being able to graduate was not the beginning of her fury. I looked towards Julia and began using sign language for her to talk to the principal.
Julia: How much will this bring down my GPA?
I stared at him trying to bargain with my eyes until he let out an exasperated sigh.
Principal Jones: I could try to keep you above a 3.5, but only if you take all of your finals tomorrow, and score at least a 75%.
My mother's rage for the moment cleared. I turned to Julia.
Julia: Can I take half of them now?
They all sat there shocked about what I was proposing. Then a loud door bell ding went off, from my phone.
WIWTS: Excuse me ladies...
I just turn to my mom and nod, to tell her it's one of her kids.
Mary Ann(text): Where's the office? Johnny go lost again!! :(
I show the screen to my mom with a tiny smirk painted on my face, as i look over my shoulder at Julia laughing as well. We both know what this means.
Mom: Excuse me for a moment.
she gets up to go look for the two of them before whipping around back at us one more time.
Mom: Also get my son started on his testing before I get back, and get his tests ready for tomorrow a well.
Principal Jones: Of coarse! I'll gather everything for you-- err... HIM now!!
