~Adira~
My alarm went off waking me up with a jolt. I cursed the mornings and praised the nights, for it was the only time I ever got to rest.
Getting out of my beloved bed and putting on my training clothes, I hear the feet that walk outside my door. Tying my hair up in a bun, I curse as I hear another pair of feet walk down the hallway. My movements are slow as I walk towards the exit of my room, waiting for the perfectly timed footsteps that I'm used to.
"Let's go Adira." He says through the crack of my door.
I grunt in protest as I fix the grey tights and tie my running shoes. He pokes his head in showing me that stupid smile as I zip up my jacket.
Joining the others in the training facility, I almost fall asleep on myself waiting for the instructor.
"Good morning future leaders!" Acarya the instructor called from the facility entrance, a little too enthusiastically for my liking.
It was an old wooden building with a giant sparring mat in the middle and bleachers that surrounded it on each of the four walls. In an adjoining room were some equipment and weapons were located in a smaller, hidden room.
I've always told my father we needed a new training facility, that the termites are eating through the wooden beams like it's a grand feast. His response is always the same, ' many generations have passed through this facility, it is an important structure with great history.'
"You know the drill we have a run, then we spar and interestingly, we're going to be doing some knife work today." He always recalls our agenda with a smirk, he knows I don't like any of it.
With a fleeting whine of discomfort I start the run through town with the other three. Training has always been a chore for me, I've been doing it for the past six years of my life and it's become a bore. Every morning at half past four I set off on a training mission that makes me miserable for the rest of the day.
Training isn't the only thing that makes me miserable, it's a very small part of it. Can you imagine yourself living in a small town that does everything for itself, it lives a totally different way from the rest of the world and the only time your allowed to leave the place you lived was to go to school. It's quite boring if you asked me.
Now can you imagine that in some years you will be the future of that town?
If everyday you got up at an ungodly hour to train with three fully grown men then go to a place where nobody likes you? Nothing is normal in my world, if you were an outsider looking into my world you would think it's crazy, it is. It's all messed up, but that's how it is. That's how I was born. I was born wrong, that's the mistake.
They wanted all males, all first born males to come from the Lord's will be the future, I was born female. I see it in their eyes when they look at me, disappointment can't be hidden. My mother says it's fear, they fear me.
Daddy's Little princess, mommy's queen. I was the special of the four, I am the crown over the three. They are my brothers we've grown up together, but they knew I was different. They always tell me they'll treat me equally but I hear the secret conversations.
I am the future.
Running back to the training facility the boys have beat me there, I always pass it off that I was just jogging but I think the lack of breath I have tells the truth to my story. Donovan is Mika's father, out of the current counsel he acts as the leader when everything is divided equally. I refer to him as the king. Today he has decided to watch us train.
