Olan L. Smith was born in Huntsville, Missouri, in 1953. He earned a bachelor's degree in religion from Northwest Christian College and a master's degree in education from Northwest Missouri State University in 1982. Inspired by poets like John Donne, John Keats, Robert Frost, William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, and e.e. cummings, Olan published his first poem in Alura Poetry magazine in 1985. His work has since appeared in several magazines and anthologies.
An artist, writer, and poet, Olan approaches life from a spiritual perspective, drawing on its essence to guide his work. After stepping away from writing for several years to focus on work and family, he has returned in his later years to dedicate himself to poetry, art, and novel writing—pursuits he finds most fulfilling.
