The white buds were pushed into his ears, the roar of music escaping from the machine, filling the truck with the tinny tune.
You felt Monty move next to you, reaching up to pull the buds out of his old friends ears, but you placed your hand on his arm, pushing him back gently. You watched the confusion that danced around in his brown eyes, the unwillingness to sit down and leave his friend be. But all you did was send him a small, sad smile, and looked back at your broken boyfriend.
"Lua, he's not getting any better." You nodded back to the teenager, body jolting around the back of the rover as it bounced over lumps in the road.
"Well, if the music is helping him cope for the time being, just let him have some of that relief." You heard Monty sigh beside you, giving up his frustration only to look out the small metal window.
Suddenly, the truck raced over a large branch, jolting itself into the air and coming down hard onto the land. Everyone around you looked dazed and slightly dizzy, but all you could feel was the slight haziness that quickly over took your brain.
"Sorry guys. Are you all okay back there?" Raven's voice sounded muffled from where she sat at the driver's wheel, but as you went to answer her, you felt like you were about to be sick. All of a sudden you slumped against Miller, head rolling down and the pounding in your brain increasing.
Bellamy let out a shout for the truck to stop, as Miller tried to wake you up from your sickening sleep, crimson blood leaking from the wound on the back of your head.
And all Jasper did was jamb the earphones in tighter, letting the noise cancel out the pained cries and the panicked voices as your friends tried to do anything to help you.
He didn't care at that moment, didn't lift an eye brow as he saw the blood that trickled out of the wound. Instead he turned back around to face the windscreen, ignoring the sharp pain that went straight through his heart, ignoring the way your cries made him want to rush to you and hold you in his arms.
But instead he sat there, drums sounding in his ears and the guilt of failure seeping into his bones.
