“If you eat that sandwich any faster then you’ll lose a girlfriend,” Kurt teased.

“Shut up. I’m hungry,” I whined, glaring at him. “I haven’t had a halfway decent meal in days.

“I feel for you, man.” He paused to take a giant bite out of his own sandwich. “I get that it’s rough with your sister’s medical bills.”

I nodded. “I may have to sell my car.”

He looked at me with sympathy. “That thing’s a piece of crap. You won’t get much money for it.”

“That’s what I told them.”

We chewed silently. “Have you introduced Bunny to the ’rents yet?”

I shook my head. “Angel’s still too sick.”

“Ah.” He nodded in understanding. “I’ve thought about taking Cookie to meet my mom.”

“That would be so much fun,” I joked. Kurt’s mom was like Bunny’s dad—overprotective of their baby girls.

“I just hope it doesn’t turn out like the last time,” he grumbled.

“Maybe I could bring Bunny. At least Clara will behave around me.”

“Would you really? God, man, I’d marry you if you did—not literally.

He glared as I started laughing. “I didn’t know, man, that you swung that way.”

“Shut up, dude.”

I was going to miss this old truck. My mom announced that we were getting rid of the old piece of junk so that we could pay the bills. I knew that we needed food more than I needed a car, but that didn’t make it any easier on me.

I parked in front of Bunny’s house just as she came running out of her home. She pecked my lips as she hopped in.

“Hey, Xavier.” She smiled warmly at me. “So, we’re double dating at Kurt’s house?”

I nodded. “Kurt’s mom is a bit overprotective.”

“Ah.” There was silence. “So, when am I going to meet your parents?”

I smiled. “Soon, beautiful.”

She blushed at the pet name. “Beautiful?”

“Yes, beautiful.”

She rolled her eyes, muttering, “It’s better than baby.”

I drove us to Kurt’s house. As soon as I pulled in the driveway, he parked on the curb with Cookie in the passenger’s seat. The two girls linked arms as soon as they were close enough. I realized how lucky we were with our mates. Being best friends and having mates that were best friends.

Kurt barely put his key in the hole before the door swung open, revealing his mother. She had bright red hair that she dyed black to hide the grays and give her an “ashy fire” look. Bright green eyes, and unbelievably short. Even Bunny was taller than her. She was probably four and a half feet tall.

“Kurt, where have you—Oh, hello, sweethearts,” she said, smiling at everyone and obviously trying to figure out which girl she should glare at.

“Hi, mom. I went to pick up my girls.” He gestured to Cookie.

“Oh, well, please come in.” She moved out of the way, allowing us entrance into her home.

“So, you’re Mrs…”
