COOKIE
I wiped at my eyes as I left their home.
“Cookie, wait!” Kurt yelled from behind me.
“No!” I yelled. “I don’t have to put up with her, and I’m not going to.”
I stomped up to his car, and opened the door. I sat inside his car, pouting stubbornly as I cried.
“Cookie.” He leaned down to my level, wiping at my eyes. “I’m sorry. She’s just…overprotective.”
“No, overprotective would be making sure I’m not having sex with you every five seconds. Your mom is crazy.”
He ran a hand through his hair. “Yeah, I know. What she did was totally uncalled for, and I couldn’t blame you if you never wanted to see me again.” He sighed. “Should I take you home?”
“No.” He looked surprised. “You owe me ice-cream.”
He chuckled. “Of course. Anything you want.”
“It better have sprinkles.”
“I couldn’t think of it without.”
I smiled. “Thanks.”
He grinned. “Anything to see you smile, babe.”
I giggled at the cheesy line. Ah, I’m so in love with this hunk of man.
* * * * * *
I laughed at something Bunny said to Abbie in the cafeteria. We were waiting for Kurt and Xavier to get Carter for Abbie. We were totally going to hook those two up!
“So, I was all, ‘My bacon!’ And I scared him so bad that he peed himself,” Bunny said, giggling toward the end.
“Remind me to never try to take your bacon,” Abbie said. We all laughed at that.
“Ladies,” Kurt said, sitting beside me. Xavier sat down beside Bunny, grinning at her. I nudged Kurt, and we scooted over to make room for Carter.
“Right here, big guy,” I said, patting the spot beside me.
He sat down awkwardly next to a blushing Abbie, who made a very unattractive sound that resembled a pig’s snort. Oh, no. I suddenly regretted not making her smoking hot in the bathroom before we came here.
“So, Abbie, what was that you were saying?” I asked to start conversation.
“That I’ll never steal Bunny’s bacon?”
Bunny grinned. “Hell yeah.”
“It’s a good thing you learned that now rather than later,” I said. “I nearly lost my hand because I found out the hard way.”
“That’s a woman,” Carter said, nodding toward of Bunny. “Any girl that’s willing to fight for her meat is A-okay in my book.”
“Then don’t mess with me and my sausage,” Abbie said. “I’ll claw your eyes out of your head.”
He smiled at her. “Niiice.”
One thing you shoulder know about Carter: He’s a surfer. He looks like a surfer and talks like a surfer. Wavy blonde hair, sea blue eyes, sun-bathed face, and a splash of freckles across his nose.
“So, how’s the beach?” Abbie asked, batting her eyes in a pitiful attempt at flirting.
“Good.” Carter flashed her a smile, his eyes lighting up at the change of conversation. “It’s filthy, though. I keep crashing against some pile of garbage.” He grimaced. “I’m trying to clean it with a bunch of other surfers, but there’s too much trash.”
“I’d love to help,” Abbie said. “Pollution in our waters is a danger to everyone.”
“Me, too,” I said. “How about you, Bunny?”
“I really, really want to, but I can’t,” she said genuinely. “I’ve got to practice for the school play, and Ms. Charleston is really strict.”
That was true. Over the past month, Bunny had been swamped with fundraisers for the play. Knowing Bunny, she’d still try to find time to help with cleaning our beach. She was just that kind of girl.
“What’s the play about?” Kurt asked.
“A remake of Beauty and the Beast,” Bunny said. “It’s going to be a modernized musical comedy.”
“I’ve read the script. It’s going to be really funny,” I added.
“Cool,” Kurt said.
There was a long silence as we all took a couple bites of food. Then the bell rang. We said our farewells, and parted. I hadn’t known that it would be awhile before we could all get together like that again.
