Chapter 39

That night we built a small cabin to sleep in. We stuck my father in a corner to sleep. He layed, tied up, not saying a word.

I slept on the other side of the room, not wanting to see my father.

Jane, Ridge, Preston, Ben, Grace, and Lora all fell asleep instantly, but it took longer for me.

Xiro and the wither were outside resting since the cabin wasn't big enough for such large mobs. But I didn't think they'd care if I went outside for some fighting practice.

I grabbed my knockback sword and decided that it wouldn't be very good for monsters so I crafted a stone one instead.

I walked outside. My whole life I'd been told that mobs were dangerous and that I should never go outside at night. But after the battle and training at HH headquarters, I was sure I could hold my own now.

Outside, the night was clear and the sky was speckled with stars. It was very dark. And I knew that where there was darkness there were monsters.

It wasn't hard to find my first zombie. Nor was it hard to kill it. All I had to do was unleash the anger he used on the dummies. Ben was right, it was an advantage when he controlled it.

Far into the night I fought for no reason. I killed mob after mob. If I was going to help lead the HH with Ben and Jane then I was going to have to train. Hard.

After killing a skeleton, my sword broke. It's strange to have something be perfectly working in your hand one moment and gone the next. But it's also a signal. A signal that I needed to sleep. My limbs agreed. They were tired and heavy.

As I walked into the cabin, something caught my eye. Or rather, something didn't catch my eye. The lack of a person.

Shocked at what I hadn't seen, I shook Jane and Ben awake quickly.

"What is it?" Ben asked sleepily.

"Why'd you have to wake us up?" Jane asked in a grumpy voice.

"Because he's gone."

"Who's gone?" Ben yawned.

"My father. And he couldn't let himself out."

Jane began to get over her anger, now looking shocked. "So that means-"

"Yeah. One of us let him out. One of us is a traitor."
