It started in the springtime, May to be exact, I saw my father with another woman who my mom and I later figured out was his patient. They were in the living room talking to each other, I had skipped school and my Dad didn't know I was home. I didn't know what to think so I didn't tell anyone. About a month later, the same girl was in our bathroom undressing and in the shower was my dad. They were showering together while my mother was out of the house. I was furious at him, I couldn't believe he would do this to his own family, especially my mom who loved him. I didn't want to hurt my mom so I didn't tell her. But about a week later my mom caught them in the act and she took me and we left the house. During that time my mom filed a divorce, I don't blame her, I would've left him too. Then my mom and I packed our bags and left for a small town in Washington. I didn't want to move at first but I didn't object, instead I followed along mutely. We drove long hours to get to our new home. I was going to miss our old house in our old town. But as soon as I saw the house I began to forget everything I'd left behind. The house was large, about 2 stories with many bedrooms and a huge basement. The house dated back to the 1900s, there was original woodwork and gorgeous chandeliers in many of the rooms. It was an extremely fancy house with so much detail it was almost too much to take. The house was more of a mansion. My mom and I bought it as soon as we saw it, but the realtor told us after we bought it that the owners before us were murdered in the house. The news was shocking but it kind of excited me, I was into horror stuff. I ran upstairs to check out the bedrooms and get first pick. As I walked down the long hallway I noticed a noise coming from one of the rooms. Curious, I opened the door to reveal a large empty master bedroom. The noise was coming from the open window, a branch was hitting the outside of the house, so I shut the window and locked it. I walked out of the room and back down the hall, opening every door. Finally I came across a room that struck my interest. The walls were painted a muted teal color, the floors were wooden, the room included a large closet, and stained glass windows. I immediately called for my mother, she came rushing upstairs and into the room.

"What's wrong?" She questioned.

"I've found my new room," I replied plainly.

As soon as our furniture was unpacked, I took care of my boxes of clothing and knick knacks. I taped some posters on the teal walls, and hung my collection of insects up. Then I packed the closet full of clothing from some of my favorite brands, my favorite being Free People. I put away the rest of the clothes in my dresser. My new room was starting to feel a lot more comfortable. I flung myself backwards onto my bed and listened to some songs off of my iPod. Then I heard my mom call from downstairs,

"Hazel! I'm going downtown to run some errands, I'll be back in a few hours!"

Then I heard the front door slam shut and from my window I saw my mom climb into the car and drive away. Well now I have some time to myself, I might as well go explore the new house. I walked back out into the hallway and downstairs, I started with the kitchen. The kitchen is a perfect size it's not too big but not extremely small either. Boring, I moved on to the dining room. My mom loves the dining room and kitchen since the appliances are almost brand new. and the gorgeous chandeliers in both rooms. The dining room is very open, it leads into the kitchen and the hallway.

*BAM!*

I heard something fall from below where I was standing. I looked down the hall past the stairs to reveal a old oak door with a stained glass window in the middle. I was startled from the loud noise, it must've came from downstairs. So I made way for the door, it creaked open slowly. I stood on the top stair, the rest fading into darkness. My hand traced the wall until I clicked a light switch on, the bottom of the steps was visible now but it was dim. I slowly departed down the stairs, taking caution with each step. They creaked under my weight. As I hit the floor my step echoed through the damp, dim, basement.

"Woah," I whispered to no one but myself.

There was shelfs full of antique jars with medical stuff in them. A medical table lies in the center next to the shelfs, with lights above it. It looked like a old hospital, one from the early 1920s. The sight excited me, I looked around and walked through each room, observing carefully. Most of it was empty except for boxes of junk from past owners. I heard the door from upstairs open and slam shut. I ran upstairs right as my mom said,

"Hazel! Come down here!"

"I'm right here, mom," I said as I ran up the stairs.

My mom dropped her groceries onto the floor, spooked.

"Dear lord, Hazel, don't sneak up on me like that!" She joked.

"Sorry mom," I replied, "now what did you need?"

My mom started to put away the groceries and mumbled from her place,

"I needed you to go grab some bags of groceries from the car."

I quickly walked outside and grabbed the rest of the bags, bringing them to the kitchen.

"I'll start dinner, you can go explore the new neighborhood or something." My mother said as she lifted a carton of milk onto the counter.

"Alright, I'll be back in about an hour." I replied.

I went back outside and shut the door behind me. My old bike my dad had bought me for my fourteenth birthday stood against the shed. I flipped up the kickstand and drug it to the sidewalk, hopping on. The soft autumn breeze caressed my hair and the wheels of my bike crunched the orange and red leaves as it rolled across them. I eventually ended up at an old skate park, graffiti lied on top of the ramps and foul words were splayed about the sidewalk. I hopped back off my sky blue bike, kicking down the kickstand. My feet felt the grass underneath as I walked over to the run down skate park. The air felt thin as I remembered my dad teaching me how to ride my first skateboard. I crossed over to the ramps and sat down on top of one. I closed my eyes and took out my iPod again. I carefully brushed back my hair and plugged a bud into my ear, pressing play.

"Hey," a gentle voice belonging to a teenage boy, said.

My eyes fluttered open. I hesitated to answer,

"Um, hi?" I said.

"What are you listening to," he asked.

"Oh, um just The Kinks." I replied.

"Cool, got any Kurt Cobain on that thing?" He responded with a half smile. I felt my mouth turn upward into a grin.
