The Montgomery's

This town was so big and I'd barley explored my house, so that's what I set out to do today. I left my room and started down the hallway, it was eerie yet comforting. The dark enveloped me the further I walked down the hall. Finally I halted as the wall blocked me from straying further. Above my head a string dangled, leading to the unknown. I tugged it and a ladder came tumbling down along with a years worth of dust. I choked on the mix of decay and filth.

"Disgusting!" I mumbled.

I looked up still scrunching my face and saw a dark room, this must be the attic. I left the ladder and walked downstairs to look for a flashlight... or a candle based on how ancient this place looked.

"Hazel! There you are," my mom said as I walked down the stairs.

"I've been here," I replied.

"Well, I made breakfast I was hoping you'd eat it."

"Not, hungry," I mumbled.

I walked over and started looking through our unpacked boxes.

"What are you looking for?" My mom questioned.

"A flashlight," I replied.

"A lot of our stuff is still packed up, they're over here," she said walking over to a cabinet.

She pulled the doors open to reveal books and files and then below a lantern.

"That looks outdated, are you sure it still works?" I asked surprised.

She yanked it out, "Oh yes I just bought it at a small boutique in town, it's not actually old."

"Oh," I said taking it from her hands, "thanks."

Then I trudged upstairs with the lantern swinging in my hands. I stepped onto the bottom step of the ladder and it creaked with my weight,

"oh!" I exclaimed.

Then I slowly moved up the ladder until I reached the top. There was one stained glass window in the whole attic, which was barley providing any light. The ceiling was very tall, I could stand up and have more room to jump. The attic had a multitude of boxes that were loosely taped and dusty. I heard a noise come from behind one, I turned to see a rat scuttle across the floor and I screamed.

"Hazel, hey calm down it's alright, I'm here." I immediately recognized the voice, Everett.

I turned around and pressed myself into his chest, not worrying about what he might think. Luckily he accepted it and he held me for what seemed like hours, then he pulled away. I wondered how he got in the house but I didn't question him.

"Sorry that I was lingering around here I was just kind of bored," he said turning his head shyly.

"That's alright, my mom is busy in the kitchen if you want to do something."

"Sure," he responded, "I was up here and I found some cool shit, check this out."

He strutted over to what seemed to be a brick wall, until he removed a few bricks and sat them on the floor gently. Then he reached in and pulled out a wooden box, there was a thick layer of dust on the top which he slid off with his hands. He proceeded to set the lid on the floor and take out a bunch of antique photographs,

"isn't this cool?"

"Wow, yeah, who took these?" I asked.

"Must be the house owners, otherwise known as the famous Montgomery's. Nora and Charles, oh and don't forget their baby Thaddeus."

"The Montgomery's? How would you know?" I asked clearly concerned.

"Well, they're quite famous." He replied mysteriously.

"If you know that then I'll assume you know when the house was built too, right?"

"Oh of course, it dates back to the 1920s, some of these pictures are from after it was built," He answered proudly.

"Impressive," I exclaimed.

I picked up one of the pictures and examined it closely, it looked just like the house but newer and there wasn't any shrubbery or trees in sight. Then there was another, a family portrait I assumed. It appeared to be Nora and Charles with Thaddeus in their arms. What a darling picture.

"Ah see, that's them!" Everett exclaimed, "I have the whole story from the beginning of their time at the house to the short ending. Want to hear it?" He said devilishly with a smirk.

"Alright, you aren't going to scare me." I replied cockily.

"That's what you say now, but just you wait," he stood up and grabbed the lantern putting it in between us. "Are you ready to hear the real story of the Montgomery's?" He questioned, still smirking at me.

"I already told you, I don't scare easily," I replied.

"That rat could disagree," he chuckled.

I rolled my eyes at him and then said, "I'm ready."

"If you're sure, then I'll grab the candles and Charles can tell you all," he said darkly.

"Sure, I said sarcastically, "I don't believe in ghosts."

Everett was fumbling around through the boxes. After a while he pulled out some white candles and said,

"if you're mom is in the kitchen we can quietly sneak to the basement, after all there's a room separating the stairs from the kitchen so we just have to be quiet."

I was shocked at how well he knew the house but he probably looked at it while it was still for sale, or when he was coming in he could've seen where everything was. After all it didn't matter how he knew.

"Why the basement?" I asked nervously.

"Charles did his work in the basement, he was a surgeon for the stars after all," Everett answered with a wink.

Then he proceeded to climb down the stairs with the candles. The stairs creaked as we took each step. I held the lantern out as I walked, cautiously. Then Everett reached the bottom and placed the candles on a covered table, lighting them all.

"Come, sit," he said.

I sat in a chair by the table noticing the clutter scattered about. But most of all the shelves, they looked old, and seemed to be holding preservatives. I also saw what looked like a work table.

"Alright," Everett exhaled, "Charles Montgomery built this house for his lovely wife, Nora. They were a rich couple, but soon after the house was built Charles began to lose money from all the expenses put into it. So, Nora called some women actresses that were just starting their careers. The women had unborn babies that they didn't want in the way of their fame. Nora sedated them and sent them to her husband who aborted the babies. They had many patients. The women were told to keep secret about their abortions but one of their patients had told her boyfriend. Angered, the boyfriend kidnapped Nora and Charles's baby Thaddeus. Days later Thaddeus was returned, chopped all apart. Nora was devastated and while she was planning the burial for Thaddeus, Charles had other ideas. He had put the poor baby back together, resurrected him. That baby wasn't the same, he had a thirst for something other then milk, something thicker and red. The monster baby bit Nora, she was upset and terrified by her husband's creation so she took a gun and tried to shoot it, but the creature wasn't damaged by her bullets. She ran downstairs and pretended to be fascinated by his creature, little to his knowledge she had come down to kill him. She put the gun to the back of his head while she held him, BANG! Shot him dead, and then herself too."

I gasped and Everett whispered, "I told you I can scare you."

"Bullshit, I'm going back to my room."

"If you say so," Everett said while blowing out the candles.

I ran upstairs with Everett behind me.

"Look, I have to go now but I'll see you soon," Everett said.

"Alright, bye."

He opened the back door and walked home, I watched him as he seemed to disappear behind the bushes. Then I trudged back up to my room.
