Every Single Morning

Waking up in a cold sweat, completely unaware of where you are and taking a while to actually remember that you're in your room is not something I like, but something that I have to live with. Yeah... recovering from a nightmare isn't the best way to start off the day. Oh well, everyone has nightmares occasionally, but none of them have them as often as I do.

"Just a dream," I say to myself out of breath. Instantly feeling relieved, I get out of bed and get ready for school.

I check the time on my phone and groan. I am currently ten minutes behind my usual morning routine. I grab my towel and make my way to the bathroom across the hall from my room. I turn on the water and then strip down. Leaving my clothes on the floor, I step into the shower.

After about ten minutes I step out of the shower and look into the mirror. My wet dark brown hair hangs down almost touching my eyebrows, I dry it off a bit and run my hand through it a few times. My eyes look a bit bloodshot from lack of sleep. I dry off, wrap the towel around my waist, grab my clothes, and head to my room.

I enter my room and throw my clothes into my hamper. I put on my glasses and go check my closet for potential outfits. I decided on a light gray long sleeve shirt and jeans and throw on a pair of socks and my converse. Feeling confident with my selection, I grab my phone and put on my earbuds on then head downstairs. I check my phone again and realize it's 7:27 am and I need to be at school at 8 am. 7:45 am if I don't want Taylor to yell at me. I'm about to text her when my mom noticed me walk in the kitchen.

"Good morning sweetie, want me to make you something to eat?" Ugh breakfast. Eating this early in the morning is so weird to me, besides, I have to make it on time.

"No that's okay mom, I'm running late and I'm not hungry. Gotta go, love you bye." I say while heading for the door.

"Oh okay," She says looking slightly disappointed. "Love you too!" she calls as I close the door.

School is only a couple minutes away from my house. If I leave my house at the right time, I can walk to school and still make it on time, which is great because my parents usually aren't around to drive me. As I'm walking my phone buzzes in my pocket. It's Taylor, probably yelling at me for not being at school yet.

Taylor: CHARLIE WHERE ARE YOU?!

Yep, just what I thought.

I'm omw. Be there in 5.

Taylor: Hurry up!!!

I turn off my phone and put it back in my pocket. It's like this almost every morning, I'm not sure how she hasn't realized saying "hurry up" doesn't make me go any faster. I chuckle to myself, she may be crazy, but I can't live without her.

After a few more minutes of walking the image of my high school came into view. This was my sophomore year at Jefferson High School, Taylor and I had met in freshman year, we were in some of the same classes. We met by her asking the entire class for their numbers. She was outgoing from the day we met. She and I talked through text that night and instantly became friends. Who knew loving the same Netflix series and books could bring people together so quickly. By the end of the year, we became best friends and basically did everything together. She was there at my happiest moments and helped me through my darkest ones.

I walk through the front door and enter the hell that is high school, turns out I made it on time with 2 minutes to spare. I'm instantly greeted with an angry Taylor. I sigh and brace myself for what she's gonna say. She walks towards me as her blonde hair flows behind her.

"CHARLIE WHEN WILL YOU GET IT THROUGH YOUR DENSE LITTLE HEAD, MEET ME AT THE FRONT DOOR EVERYDAY AT 7:45! YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS? 7:58! UNBELIEVABLE! YOU'D THINK THA-"

I cut in, "Nice to see you too Taylor." I smirk at her, she makes a rude gesture at me but seems to have lightened up.

"You are so lucky that I had my coffee this morning Charlie Clark, if I hadn't, I would've ruined that pretty gay face of yours." She snaps at me playfully. Every single morning I smile to myself. Taylor is all bark and no bite, she's very intimidating and loud if she needs to be, but in reality, she is the nicest person ever.

"Yeah yeah love you too, anyway, what class do we have first?" I ask her, we share only two classes together sadly.

She responds, "We have bio together and then you have math, I have history."

"Ugh, alright let's go to our lockers."

We make our way down to the first floor and we split in opposite directions. To much of our annoyance, we were assigned lockers on the opposite ends of the hallway from each other. It didn't really matter though, we'd always come by and visit anyway. I suppose it was somewhat good for me, the locker next to mine wasn't assigned to anyone which meant much less awkward glances and interactions between people near my locker and me.

I make it to the locker and put in the combination. I pull the locker door open. On the inside of the door, I have a picture of Taylor and me, a copy of my schedule, and a mini pride flag. I stare at the pride flag remembering last year when I came out. The most life-changing event that ever happened to me. Memories, good and bad, come back from the corners of my mind. I quickly snap out of it, sending them back to the locked box in deepest part of my mind. I grab my books for Bio and my next few classes and head to class. Only a couple weeks in and I already memorized my class schedules and room numbers, which is not something I did until mid-year during my freshman year. Oh, how the times have changed.
