On Sleepless Nights

Nights are deep.
The darkness they bring is an illusion.
When the sweet pull of sleep forsakes you
You are left alone with your mind until the morning.

Sometimes they are smothered by fear
Suffocating you in silent apprehension
Only broken by the noisy beating of your heart
Ears lying imaginary sounds to your soul
Demons could be whispering
Or your imagination is weaving a noose
Making it out of shadows
Your vision is plagued by malevolent evils
Dancing about like ballerinas
Beautifully wicked
Like roses wilting under the first frost
Death about to snag you in his cruel hook
Grim Reaper a fisherman
Lucifer cackling and peering through the window

Some nights are peaceful
God smiling his fortune upon you
Exciting over the possibilities lain before you
Multitudinous as daisies in a field
And bright as the sun
Contemplating joy
Finding the meaning in your life
Your body is undisturbed and left alone
Your soul floating among the stars
The troubles of your past are well behind you
The only thing ahead is the sweet fruits of your labor
Love illuminates the world as if the sun and the moon were one
The heart is fulfilled and taps peacefully against your breast
In the rhythm of life
A tireless timpanist whose beat you sing along to.

What the night brings to you reveals what you bring to the night.
The music you make rings back in your ears on sleepless nights.
