Waiting in Line

I thought to myself as I stood in a line
How people come
How people go
How some people stay forever.

I thought to myself that if someone was mine
I'd know when she'd come
I'd never let her go
I'd stay by her side forever.

What if a girl came behind me in line
We'd talk some
Our names we'd know
We felt like we'd been friends forever?

What if our likeness created friendship fine
We stayed in touch
Became close friends
Promised to be friends forever?

What if we became stars aligned
We fell in love
Our love had no end
She stayed by my side forever?

Quiet, I told those strange thoughts of mine
Your dream must end
Its possibility unsighted
Because it has been the same forever.

Then I heard a girl talking behind me in line
To one of her friends
My thoughts ignited
My spark of hope that burned forever.

What a beautiful voice, said those dumb thoughts of mine
What if I turned around
What if we talked
And shared that dream I've had forever?

I swiveled my head, pretending to survey the line
In her pretty face I found
No courage to talk
No courage to chase my forever.

The time ticked by as I waited in line
I listened to her talk
I learned her name
I felt like that line lasted forever.

I almost talked to her many times
But I didn't want
To sound so lame
I ended up staying silent forever.

After it came time for me to leave the line
I remembered her name
I remembered her face
But I won't remember her forever.

But I like to think that if I'd turned around in line
We would have fallen in love
I never would have let her go
And I would have stayed by her side forever.

I'll never know.
