Rose walks into work with a smirk on her face. She still had Jack on her mind. He treated her so well. She had constantly thought of how well he treated her compared to how Cal had treated her. Although, if asked, she would have admitted that there were some good times with Cal, but every day was a good day with Jack. She felt so lucky. She wasn't like her mother or Cal; snobby. She had always been a sweet down to earth woman. She never expected to find someone, let alone end up with someone who happened to be the same as her though. Mostly because her marriage with Cal had been arranged due to the money shortage taking place within her family. As she continued to stroll into work, still smirking, and day dreaming about her beloved man, she bumped into another woman. The woman had been wearing a worn out cream colored, slightly torn dress. It had buttons down the middle of it, along with ridges beside them. The sleeves had been long, down to the woman's wrist and the dress fell down to her ankles. She had been wearing off-white flat shoes along with the dress. Rose's smile quickly changed to a sincere face.
She snapped back into reality, "I'm so sorry! Truly!" she pleaded for forgiveness. In that moment, she stopped apologizing and anger grew inside of her. She frowned, "Mother." She said in a monotone voice. "Rose!" Her mother angrily exclaimed. "I've been worried. I've been around the city looking for you. Do you see what I am wearing Rose? All because you wanted to run off with someone who can't even afford to live for himself. What a disgrace." She complained while looking around. "Speaking of which, where is-"she paused, and made eye contact with Rose, "It". Rose flashed a sarcastic smile towards her mother in mockery. "My soon to be husband is working." She said proudly putting her hands on her stomach. This made Ruth's suspicion rise. "And, by the way, I will not have you speak so lowly on the man who is about to be the father of my child." Rose said with sass while now rubbing her stomach.
Ruth grew pale, "Rose, I will not tolerate any tom foolery. I know you are not actually about to have a child with this man. In fact, I'm sure this is a cry for help. You probably saw me in this shop and finally came to your senses. Let's go." Ruth says in doubt, grabbing onto Rose's wrist. Rose gives Ruth a dirty look and snatches away. "Would I lie about such a thing? In fact, Ruth, I came in here because I work here so that my baby will be taken care of by both me and its father." Rose said with an attitude. Ruth looked as though she may fall over in disbelief. "Rose, I cannot believe you became so irresponsible as to get pregnant by a boy who will never be able to provide for you and that baby. One day, you will realize what a mistake you are making this very moment, and you will come crawling back." Ruth said angrily. "I cannot believe you chose this gutter rat over a successful and rich man such as Cal. Ruth added. Rose snickered to herself, "Well, mother, if you like him so much, why don't YOU marry him." Rose sarcastically said while walking away from Ruth. Ruth huffed loudly over the amount of disrespect her daughter just paid her and stormed out of the restaurant. Rose, having only five minutes to start, rushed to the back to check in and returned to the front to seat customers and take their orders.
While Rose continued to do her job, Jack had just arrived to the first day on his. When Jack walked in, the factory was pretty noisy. His boss immediately approached him. "Jack? Correct?" His boss asked. "Uh, yes sir." He shouted back over the noise. "Nice to meet you." He forced a polite smile and stuck his hand out, "I'm William." He said. He provided Jack with a pair of work pants and a work shirt and assigned him a place to start. "You can work with George here; he'll teach you what you need to know in this position." William said and walked off to observe other employees. George looked at Jack and smiled, "Why don't you go into that bathroom and get changed. This is a pretty messy job." George suggested and pointed in the direction of the bathroom. "Thank you." Jack politely said and made his way to the bathroom. The air was filled with the scent of motor oil and gasoline due to the production of the cars being done. It was not a pleasant scent but it was something Jack knew he needed to get used to so he can take care of Rose and his unborn child. He rushed to the bathroom and quickly changed into his new work uniform. He came back out and threw his clothes onto a nearby bench hoping they'd be safe there. Once he did that, he looked around for George and made his way over to him. "Okay, I'm back." Jack said. "Hello, so all you're going to be doing for starting is polishing the metal being put onto the cars. I normally work towards the end of the line which is the hardest one, but for this week I will be working with you. Polish all the metal and then hand it to that guy, his name is Paul. He will take it to the car to be placed onto it. Once you do this, depending on your skill level, we may move you around. Not too hard huh?" George casually asked. Jack flashed a polite smile and began polishing the metal.
Although Jack and Rose have the same starting time for work, Rose gets out a few hours earlier. She went to the back to clean a bit and then clock out. It was only twelve in the afternoon so she decided she would go enjoy a walk through central park. As she stepped outside of Barbetta, a man walked up behind her. She felt the presence close behind her but did not want to turn around, not thinking anything of it. "Your mother told you I might find you here." How did she know when I get out? Rose thought to herself. Chills traveled up her spine causing her body to shiver. After being tortured by the sound of that voice for so long, she would have known it anywhere. "Cal, would you just leave me alone?" She desperately begged, not wanting to deal with the drama. She could hear Cal laugh softly under his breath. She grew disgusted. "I heard you're with child now? Oh, and by that thing?" Cal disrespectfully said. "Just go Cal, if you heard already, why have you sought me out to ask? Rose angrily said. She still hasn't turned around, not wanting to see his face. Cal, again, laughed. He hadn't found anything funny; he was just confused how such a beautiful woman could resist a rich and successful man. Just then, Cal grabbed Rose by the arm and began dragging her along with him. People standing nearby the restaurant ignored this all the while feeling guilty. Rose grew even angrier. "Let me go! I'm not your property Cal; you no longer have the right to treat me however you'd like. I told you to leave me alone, so please just leave me alone." Rose loudly exclaimed. She pulled away from him and slapped him. He grabbed his face, in shock of her sudden outburst. He never expected Rose to talk back to him like that. "How dare you, a woman below me, speak to me in such a way?" Cal shouted. Rose began walking away, and Cal began to follow. Would he ever just give up? Rose began thinking. He grabbed her again and pulled her close to him, not realizing he also hit her stomach. She collapsed in pain.
