DOUBLE D
It was a pretty average Tuesday morning at Peach Creek High School. The wind ran wild through the dry October air. It was early enough that the leaves on trees still had their green color. Leaves whipped around with the wind, baring the question of how long the colors of summer had before falling under the autumn spell. Edward took notice to this, trying to calculate in his mind how long it would take before the first leaf would drop.
"Are you even listening, Sockhead?" Eddy's loud voice broke Double D's concentration, bringing him back to the world where everything revolved around the middle Ed.
"I'm sorry, Eddy. I must've been lost in thought. What was it we were talking about?" Edd wasn't as sorry as he attempted to sound. Eddy always talked his ear off, rarely taking a second to breathe before rambling on to the next issue he had to complain about. Unfortunately, Double D didn't have the stomach to tell him off. His passive nature refused him from attempting any harmful tones or words. Over the years, it's only made him more of a pushover than anything.
Eddy glared, gritting his teeth and growling at his friend. "That's the fifth time this week, DD. You've really gotta start using that big brain of yours." His questioning of Edd's intelligence struck a nurve, forcing Double D to wince away from Eddy's direction. "I was talking about last night's homework. I still need to copy it before school." Double D reached into his bag, positioning the single shoulder strap to make his search easier. As he reached into the outside region of his bag, furthest away from him, Double D pulled out a clean folder. There were no pictures, markings, dents, or creases. It was just a clean, green folder with the label HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS - FINISHED on the upper left hand corner. Edd pulled out a paper covered in math questions that were filled out as thoroughly and neatly as possible.
Edd handed the paper to his friend while attempting to make a remark. Before he could get a word out, Eddy snatched the paper out of his hand and wrote down all of the answers on his own paper. Double D watched as his once clean-pressed paper was being manhandled and wrinkled. "Honestly, Eddy. I would've hoped you actually did your homework this time."
"Can it, Sockhead. Mom got me a new game since I got an A on the last Algebra test."
"You mean the A you cheated for?" Double D tried to correct him.
"Hey, an A's an A. Anyways, I was up all night trying to beat it so I didn't have time to finish the homework. Besides, I knew I could count on you to help me out." Edd frowned, recalling back to as many times as he could where he allowed Eddy to cheat off of him. My word, Edd thought to himself, I've let him get away with this ever since the beginning of our freshman year. I must put a stop to this. Edd turned to his friend, prepared to put an end to his madness. When he turned, Edd's paper was smacked in his face. Double D scrambled to recollect the crinkled mess, furious towards Eddy's carelessness with things that don't belong to him.
"Thanks, DD. At least I'll get a B from it." Eddy shoved his own assignment in the pocket of his khaki shorts. His legs were very bony, except for a bit of chub on his calves. He didn't really seem to pull off shorts very well.
Edd flinched at the sound of homework being so mistreated. "Um, Eddy." Double D tried his best to stay calm and polite. "Perhaps it's time that you start doing your own work. We are seniors after all, and I can't do all of your homework forever."
"What are you talking about? Of course you are. We're all sticking together until we're dead, remember."
"Yes, that's the thing. What happens when we all go off to college?"
Eddy didn't respond very well to his question. He just started laughing uncontrollably. Double D looked at him with am uncomfortably puzzled look. After a minute of his obnoxious screaming, Eddy wiped a tear from his eyes. "Come on, Sockhead. College? Do we look like the kind of guys that belong in college? Right when we get out of high school, we're opening up our own business with me as president. You and Ed will be my first employees."
The boys finally reached the front of the school, continuing their conversation as they walked through the double door entrance. "That's very kind of you, Eddy, and very ambitious. Unfortunately, I-"
"Ed! Get over here!" Eddy screamed loudly, interrupting Edd. Double D followed Eddy's gaze, finding Ed charging towards them. He had been talking to his girlfriend, May. Double D believed Eddy always screamed when May was around because he was jealous of the attention. The summer before sophomore year, all of the Kankers lost interest in the Eds other than May, who finally treated Ed like a human being and asked him on a real date. Anyways, people usually attempted to avoid Eddy's screaming, knowing for a fact that it's nothing but trouble. Ed's stampeding slid to a halt just a foot away from the other Eds. Before Ed could even say hello to his friends, Eddy jumped up and clamped onto his earlobe. He pulled Ed down so he was at eyelevel with the shortest of them all. "Ed, what did we talk about?" Eddy seemed genuinely upset. Then again, he was known best as the school's hothead.
"Uhhh, never butter your toast with a ladle?" Ed really believed that was the answer, having had the conversation at Eddy's house the night before.
His answer only further irritated Eddy. "No, you dumb gorilla! When I'm here, you're with me. You're with the group, not your girlfriend. Got it?"
The small Ed's explosive rudeness didn't seem to phase the big guy at all. Ed just smiled as hard as he could and chuckled. "Okay, Eddy!" Letting go of Ed's ear, Eddy brushed away the smell of gravy. "May was just telling me that she will miss me and I said I will miss her." Ed frowned, bothered by being away from her.
"Relax. It's only for five days. You'll see her this weekend." Eddy continued walking, forcing the other Eds to follow behind him. "This trip is exactly what the boys need. No school, tons of girls, and plenty of powder to catch some awesome boarding."
"But, Eddy. None of us know how to snowboard." Edd chimed in.
"Speak for yourself, Sockhead. I've been watching tons of snowboarding shows. I'm practically a master by now." Eddy was so occupied with his ego that he hadn't noticed the laces of his shoes being undone. Lifting his foot to take a step, the lace tugged under his other shoe, immobilizing his feet. Eddy yelped as he fell forward, right on his chest. He groaned before looking up and seeing Nazz in front of him with an extended hand. Eddy's whole body instantly went numb. The other Eds couldn't help but take notice of her beauty as well. Her hair was a golden blond that reached past her shoulders. She had clear, smooth skin. Her eyes were emerald green. Her body was the best looking compared to any girl at Peach Creek. She seemed to rock the new senior look of a black crop top covered by a white jacket zipped halfway. Her skinny jeans hugged every inch down to her white and black Converse High Tops.
"Need a hand?" Nazz asked with voice like honey and a bright, white smile.
Eddy attempted to speak, but his words came out a hot mess of jumbled letters, "Ughsucuglaples," Nazz giggled at him. The school's lead dancer took his hand and helped him up anyways. Eddy just continued to mumble strange words and sounds.
"Thank you, Nazz. Eddy is very appreciative of your kind actions." Edd gave her a big, gapped smile.
Nazz smiled back, "It's no problem. Are you guys going to the senior class trip? I hear there's going to be a dance on the last day and everything."
"We are very excited to go!" Ed yelled out with enthusiasm. "But Eddy is more excited about the snow and hot girls that are going to be there." Nazz raised her brows, unsure how to respond to such a comment. Eddy immediately snapped out of his trance and turned to glare aggressively at Ed. Despite his size, the smallest Ed didn't shy away from a fight with anybody. That was usually the main cause of his getting into trouble.
Eddy's anger shifted with a single sentence, "Hey, babe." Kevin strolled up and wrapped an arm around Nazz's shoulders. Eddy glared at him, gritting his teeth and shaking uncontrollably. "What's goin' on?" Unlike Eddy, Kevin seemed cool and collected. His fiery red bangs brushed out of his deep red hat that had been flipped so the black bill was facing backwards. A dark green tank top was being covered by a black zip up, which didn't do a very good job of hiding his large muscles. Like Nazz, his eyes were also a beautiful green. The only difference was that Kevin's eyes were darker and far more bruding.
"Hey, Kev!" Nazz greeted him. "We were just talking about the trip this week."
"Cool." Kevin's voice didn't show too much emotion. Far different from Eddy's tone, Kevin's actually showed an interest in what people were talking about. "Ready to get to class? We're gonna end up being late."
Nazz sighed in disappointment over the end of their conversation. "I guess." She turned back to the Eds. "I'll see you dudes around." Kevin and Nazz walked off, starting their own conversation. Double D just smiled and waved them a friendly goodbye while Ed stood blankly as he watched them leave. By this point, Eddy was fuming out his ears.
"Why is she with him? He's just some muscle head!"
"Now, now, Eddy. You mustn't let your jealousy cloud your judgment. Kevin and Nazz have more chemistry than you and Nazz have. Therefor, they're more compatible together."
"Chemistry has nothing to do with this!" Eddy stormed off. Double D sighed, forced once again to to follow. Even though he once had a crush on Nazz, Edd had grown out of it. Eddy on the other hand had become nearly obsessed. His bitterness towards Kevin was driven by pure envy. Edd could understand his pain though. Kevin was an Adonis - a paragon of male perfection - and Eddy was...Eddy. the shortest senior. The childish outcast. The nobody without a future, still wearing the same styles clothing from middle school. The only thing about him that had changed over the years was the sleeve of tattoos on his right arm and the darkened, gelled up hair. Everything else was the same, especially the temper.
Despite Eddy's cruelty and bitterness, Double D still tried to make him feel better. "I believe it is best to relieve Nazz from your conscience. By tomorrow afternoon, you'll be able to show off your exquisite talent for snowboarding. Every female there will be swooning over you."
Eddy's anger subsided, giving birth to a mischievous grin. "Yeah, you're right. No girl will be able to resist me." Eddy continued to boost his own ego as he spoke nonstop about himself. Double D smiled at himself, succeeding in cheering up his best friend. However, he also feared that he may have given him too large of a head.
