Summer walked triumphantly to the house after her date. She enjoyed herself so much, that she felt prepared for anything. And as she went alone, she heard voices calling out to her. One in particular was louder and clearer. It was a woman's voice she heard.
"Hello?" she called out. The voice didn't respond. But in the absence of the voice, silence took over before hearing a growl. Summer swiftly turned around wielding her scythe. She dove for cover behind a large tree in the clearing.
In the distance she could see grimm appear. Before she made any actions, she remembered her promise to Qrow. To keep living.
And as Summer dove towards the Beowolf, she could hear the wind whispering in her ear. To let her fly free. She spun around in the air and flew towards the grimm at full speed. Wiping it off the face of Remnant. Vale would be safe. Mistral would be safe. Atlas would be safe. Vacuo would be safe. As long as she was here to save them.
Summer started breathing heavy after that fight. She never told anyone about what she'd done.
She acted normal while attending her best friends' wedding. She acted fine at the reception. And months later at Raven's baby shower. Nobody cared enough to ask why. Except Qrow.
Summer was forced to stop crying after speaking with him. Her vision clouded and her eyed stinging from the flood of tears. Her hands shaking and her lips quivering. He ended it silently with a kiss.
Summer stood watching as he walked away. She waited a year for him to return. That time came.
She was cleaning dishes in a home when she felt a tug at her leg. Summer peered down to see a blonde little girl running wildly throughout the cabin. Summer smiled as she turned the water off and dried her hands.
"Yang! Look at you!" she exclaimed picking up the small child. Yang laughed and nestled into Summer's embrace. "Where'd your daddy go?" she told the toddler.
Yang looked over Summer's shoulder and pointed to the man doing laundry. Summer approached him and set the little girl in the basket. Taiyang laughed as he picked her up smiling. Summer smiled too.
Then as she grabbed her bag to leave, Taiyang reached for her arm. "Thank you," he said facing her. Summer nodded and opened the door.
She clicked the last button on her cape, and pulled the hood up. She walked away and carried the brown leather bag with her. Inside of it were old memories and a few things Taiyang gave her.
She hopped long the pathway to her house, when she spotted a black bird with piercing red eyes on the nearby tree.
A crow? Or a... Raven!
Summer stepped back and ran home. When she got there, the bird was no longer following her. The Raven went the opposite direction. But a pesky crow infiltrated.
He sat holding a small glass filled with an amber substance. A few ice cubes were inside and condensation dripped off the cup. She locked the door while setting her bag on the hook. Her hood fell behind her shoulders as she looked forward. Staring in disbelief at who was before her.
"When did you get in?" she asked.
"About a minute ago. Right before you stepped in. Dear."
Summer's heart skipped a beat when she heard him say that. "Does this mean-"
"I kept my promise to you. That I'd protect the both of you." he said standing up to face her.
"What happened when we met three months ago, was that for real or was it to compensate for when you left?"
His face turned to stone as he faced Summer while she spoke.
"I know I can't apologize for what I did, and I know you won't forgive me Summer. But hear me out; why did you stay by my side even when I couldn't live with the guilt?"
"Because I know how it feels when you lose someone important. And I want you to understand that she should've left. Because I'll be here. I don't know where we should go next. But I know that you wouldn't give up on us either. And if we could never get married, then at least stay for your niece, fiancee, and your child Qrow!"
It went silent as a single tear fell down her face.
"Rose, I didn't mean- I didn't want you to end up like this."
Summer shook her head. "Promise you'll look after her if something were to ever happen to me. Let her know she's safe. And have her visit Yang a lot. Because I love you."
With that Summer kissed him goodbye and ran. Far from her home, far from the woods. All the way to a small clearing that branched out into the Grimm ridden Winter woods. The place Summer felt peace aside from what she normally felt.
Taking out all her frustration there was easy. Scythe to the throat on each beowolf. Each death stalker wishing they were never born. And the crazy rare nevermores flying away in fear of what the thorn covered rose could do. How her potential was highly exceptional to the rest. Because of the silver eyes.
The same silver eyes her daughter might carry.
So as Summer finished her rounds, she sluggishly walked home feeling aches and sores all over. And definitely not wanting to injure the small flower growing inside her.
When she arrived, it was dusk and there was no sign of Qrow. She assumed he took his drunken nature elsewhere to avoid Summer seeing him. But instead, she found him outside on the back balcony staring at the moon. No trace of alcohol near him.
Summer calmly approached him, and to her surprise he didn't refuse the company. She didn't even have the courage to speak. He did it first.
"Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you track me down to explain why you're pregnant? With our child?" He briefly spoke.
Summer stood staring and not wanting to argue. "I'm sorry," was all that came out. Tears ran down wildly while she sobbed quietly.
Qrow turned around and held her hand. His cold breath meeting her own. He didn't smell like the booze he'd been drinking before. He smelled friendly and approachable. Like the comforting scent of charcoal burning from a fire. Or Autumn leaves crackling in the distance as they danced to the ground.
She embraced him. Lightly though. As close hugs were postponed until she gave birth. He never wanted this to end. But things escalated quickly from there on.
Their lips found each other. And before she knew it, she even forgot what started the argument in the first place.
