KNOCK KNOCK

"I'll get it,"

"Thanks sis."

When she opened the door, her jaw dropped. She hadn't expected this in all her time away from the fields. She stood not in disguise, but out in the open. She wore a white trench coat stained with red on the bottom along singed edges. In her hand, an umbrella covering her head from the rain. She hadn't noticed the small shadow behind her.

Wait, she doesn't talk still?! What a waste of my damn time...

She looked over at the gathering behind her former enemy, and sighed. With a letter in her hand, she begrudgingly held it out for the blond to accept. Yang studied the handwriting, and the small feather hidden on the side of the seal.

"Why are you here?" she asked with direct force towards her.

"Yang, who's there?"

"Nobody Ruby," she told her sister from the background.

Ruby didn't buy it. The visitor watched as Ruby set a small red blob in what she assumed was her husband's hands. Ruby got up and approached the door mind her sister's warning.

"Ah Neo!"

"Keep your voice down please!"

Ruby quickly covered her mouth after seeing the sign appear from Neo's hands.

"Mama, who are these people?" the voice from behind said.

Then out of nowhere, she said "Not yet Roen,"

The child assumed by the name of Roen, looked up with weary, pleading eyes to the two young women at the door. Yang and Ruby looked shocked hearing Neo speak even a small line. The most they heard was her snicker when they'd lost or been defeated.

Neo held another sign up to the girls saying, "Will you train my son?"

"T-Train him? You do realize two things right? One, we have our own kids to take care of, and two, you're a sworn enemy!" Yang shouted.

"Was. I've changed. And can't we chat somewhere, you know, less rainy?"

Ruby sighed and opened the door. She made room for two more people at the extended dining room table, and welcomed Neo and Roen in.

"Ruby are you serious right now?"

"Yang, my house, my rules and regulations. I'm allowed to do as I please because I forgive and forget."

Yang looked expressionless as anguish filled her eyes and made her stare. She'd never seen Ruby become so aggressive then inviting all at once. Maybe it was her will to live and protect Prim so he didn't end up like how Ruby was raised. No mother, and on a lie.

She quietly shut the door without alerting the guests, and took her seat.

Ruby smiled as she approached the cabinets and the food, just to have Qrow stop her. "Wouldn't you like to join them for dinner? I can handle it,"

"I know, but they're my guests. I want to make them feel welcome. So it's only fair if I serve."

"Ruby you literally only got rest for like four hours, how can you be so-"

"Energized? Naturally it's the way I am. I feel like it's right. Please let me be an adult Dad,"

Qrow sighed as he left and sat back down near Prim. Jaune held their baby, and reluctantly agreed to let Prim's grandfather hold him.

Meanwhile, Yang shot nasty, pitiful glares at Neo across the table; obviously clinging to a grudge from years ago.

Why the hell is this girl here of all times? Doesn't she know from her base or whatever of the new arrival? She still call her Red as well?

As Yang was lost in thought, Ruby set the plates down before her guests.
"Ahem, everyone? You all remember Neo right? Well aside from our past battles, she is uh, 'reformed'. She's
a guest so greet her with kindness and give her respect and equality like the rest. Alright?"

Most of them nodded, accepting her for the most part, but Yang slowly agreed as she was dishonest and distrustful. Yang thought she knew Neo shouldn't be trusted.

Taiyang was quick to hand off Phoenix to his mother as he scurried to the upstairs bathroom. Yang watched her father leave as she carefully bounced her son.

Neo glanced at Ruby's kind acts towards the others, as Yang continued staring. Weiss noticed her and tilted her head at Ruby who looked back at her sister.

"It's fine," she told Yang.

"But it's not."

"You don't have to be so stubborn,"

"She's here Ruby! A former enemy approaches your door, where a baby lives, and you just accept her with open arms?!"

"Yang keep your voice down! There are guests-"

"Guests? Ruby, are you fucking kidding me? I don't give a damn if they're guests!"

Ruby stood shocked. She didn't know whether to ask politely for her to leave, or any other option. Yang was boiling with rage. The very person who almost killed her, sitting right there. Her eyes were red, and her fists held tightly as she got up and slammed the table.

Putting Phoenix in his portable crib, she took the handle and her bag and excused herself. Her robotic limb twitched, as if telling her to go back, but she ignored it and kept walking.

Once she reached the door, Taiyang grabbed her wrist. "Don't go,"

"Can't you see I'm not wanted here?"

"Nobody said that-"

"They didn't have to."

With that she left quietly. But as Ruby settled her friends and family, she put Prim in his blanket, and handed him to Jaune.

"Where are you going?"

"To talk to my sister. Watch Prim and keep this under control okay?"

He nodded as she hugged his shoulder. Then she took her cape and wrapped it around her neck. Equipping her scythe, she approached the wooden door next from where it was brutally slammed.

Somebody had to stand up and go too. And that person who joined her, was Qrow Branwen.

They said goodbye as they left out into the cold night with the crisp Autumn air.

Both equipped with weapons, prepared to fire. Ruby had never seen such an outburst. Even from the hotheaded Yang.

"If she's going to sacrifice something, don't let it be your family," Ruby thought. "Sacrifices are for the ones you love."

Then Summer came to mind. Ruby had a slight smile of remembrance.

A worthy sacrifice...
