Old Friends and Disappointment

It was impossible. How could I remember someone from so long ago when I could barely remember my family. It was probably because it was nearly impossible to forget him after all the insufferable pain he caused me.

"Get out." I tried shouting but I was losing my voice.

"Oh come on Devyn. Not even polite enough to say hi?" He said filling the sentence with sarcasm.

"Unbelievable. It's been 3 years and you haven't changed a bit." I rolled my eyes.

"I don't see what you're trying to get at." He took a step closer.

"Don't come any closer or I swear to god I will make the nurse call the cops."

"Aw. You have quite the attitude today. I like it." He grinned.

"In fact. I love it. You aren't the same little girl who yelped for help and didn't know what to do. You're tougher, but still weak. As you can tell." He added and tilted his head to the side to examine my body.

"Janise can you get Rebecca." She got up and walked out shutting the door behind her.

Why did she shut the door? Was all I could think.

"Come on Devyn give me a chance. I don't even remember what I did." He pronounced.

"OH MY GOD! You can't possibly be kidding. You beat me and abused me. Multiple times if I may add. I lied to my mom when she asked why I had so many bruises and scratches. I spared you years and years of suffering and pain. I should have put your ass in jail when I had the chance." I yelled.

"Should of let you rot there." I mumbled.

"Oh don't you see sweetheart-" He came closer making me scoot back.

"You don't have the guts to. You're a woos. Can't save yourself." He was now standing next to my bed.

"RE-" He covered my mouth just as I was about to call Rebecca.

Luckily she came in just then. James smiled at her.

"Are you ok?" She asked.

"He's not a friend. Call security."

Before she could finish dialing the number he was out of the room.

"I'm sorry." She said.

"It's ok just don't let him back in." I ordered.

"Ok." She smiled and left Janise in here with me.

I went to bed a couple minutes later. I was still scared that he would possibly hurt me. I only hoped I was safe.

I spent the next day reading the book that Rebecca gave me. Every couple hours I would take a couple minutes to rest. I had no visitors that day, just the new nurses that would switch places with the old one to watch me and every hour or two a nurse knocking asking if I was hungry.

The one thing that had been on my mind all day was if Sam was going to visit. I had so many questions I was wanting to ask him but I can't while I'm stuck in a hospital bed almost 24/7 for now.

I heard a small knock on the door. I was hoping to see Sam walk in but it was the nurse.

"Hi." I sunk back down in my bed.

"Hi. So I have good news and bad news. Which one do you want first?" She asked the usual question.

"Bad." I answered.

"Ok. Your test results were still a little unstable so you won't be able to go home just yet. We need to monitor you and make sure you're doing ok before going home. The good news is is if you are stable over the course of the next to week to week and a half you can go home in about two and a half weeksish."

She handed me a Manila folder with my name in bold letters on a white sticker in the corner.

"What's this?" I questioned.

"Those are your release papers. Just wanted you to take a quick look at them and review them. We can't have you sign them just yet because if you aren't steady we will have to keep you longer, but I just wanted you to scan over it."

"Ok I will do that." I smiled and set the folder on the table next to me.

"How you holdin' up?" Someone opened the door.

To my surprise it was Sam.

"I've had better days." I admitted.

"Sorry you're on bed rest. I know how much that must suck."

"It's ok. What about you? You were miserable when I last saw you." I interrogated.

"To be honest, not good at all.-"

"I couldn't stand thinking about you. It hurt." He said in addition.

"I still don't know you that well and from my understanding you were there when I had this accident."

"Yeah I was."

"Oh. I just was wondering if you could tell me what was going on and what happened." I asked.

I felt like one of those detectives on a t.v. show trying to solve a case.

"Devyn-"

"I kissed my ex so I guess what you could say is I cheated on you."

"You what?!" I shouted.

"I know. You forgave me though. I took you on a romantic date at the park and we were about to kiss on the bridge and you fell. I tried to grab you but it was too late." He said.

"Where are we?" I asked.

"Valencia. The guys and I are all staying at the hotel for the time being. Your family left this morning because your dad had to work. They couldn't stay but your dad offered to pay for us until you got out of the hospital and a couple days afterwards so we could go back and celebrate your birthday."

I nodded.

"I'm trusting you that I forgave you, but it's going to take some time to get used to all of this. I can't be with you right now Sam. I'm sorry." I felt like I was disappointing everyone.
