Feathery whispers, angelic voices, dim flashes of a light, they all awoke me from my dreamless sleep. Before I was even able to realize what had happened to me, a sharp pain in my abdomen landed me a hand, bringing back those horrible memories.

I regained sense in my fingertips and managed to get a faint hold of something soft and thin. I was alive, and my first instinct was to open my eyes to the world. I felt my heavy eyelids slowly part ajar and as I slowly adjusted to my surrounding, a warm sensation coursed through my entire body, and I beginning to recover control over it.

My nerve endings grew stronger and stronger, pumping chemicals and electric shocks through my cells, allowing me to distinguish the touch of a hand on my neck, and a steady breathing on my face. The touch felt human but it was also very slippery on my skin, like rubber.

A sharp smell pierced my nostrils as I inhaled deeply, making me cringe. It wasn’t pleasant at all, it smelt industrial and artificial, like a bottle of pills. When my fifth and final sense kicked in at last, I smacked my lips together, tracing the inside of my mouth with my tongue. It felt dry and tasteless, as if I had fasted for days and days.

I managed to look past my dark eyelashes and soon made out a figure close to me. It was that of a young women, whose kind yet mirthless smile along with the pair of sad, beautiful eyes, let me know I was safe. “Sierra?” Kayla whispered to me gently and her soft hand traced my forehead. “Honey?” She repeated, barely raising her voice. “Can you hear me?” She inched closer to me.

I blinked a couple more times and look around, noticing that I was in a hospital room. “Water.” I mumbled hoarsely, my throat felt raspy and dry. Kayla’s head shot up to look to my left and that’s when I realized that there was someone else in the room with us. The gloved hand belonged to the doctor who was apparently checking my vitals.

“Here.” She handed me a glass of water, bringing a thin straw to my lips. I sucked the liquid in slowly, feeling it fill my body up with the bliss of human life. “Are you experiencing any pain?” the doctor asked me. She wore a name tag but my eyes weren’t strong enough to focus on the tiny letters on it.

“My stomach hurts.” I groaned as I tried to sit up, but failed due to a flaming sensation at the side of my body.

“Miss Reyes you survived 12 hours of intense abdominal surgery, including tissue and organ reconstruction, it is more than expected for you to experience pain, it means that your body is healing. The pain medication should kick in in a number of minutes.” The doctor informed me and I wanted to hurl. I had no clue how long it had been since Deacon had broken into my house, I had no idea what was going on with him, I didn’t know anything.

“Organ reconstruction?” I repeated and slowly pushed the covers away. I peeked inside my hospital gown and saw a long bandage right underneath my ribcage. “Am I going to poop in a bag for the rest of my life?” I mumbled and a sound that was a mixture of a laugh and a cry left Kayla’s lips.

“No, Miss Reyes, you’re expected to make a full recovery.” The doctor assured me and excused herself out of the room.

“I love you.” Kayla wailed and sat on the corner of my bed, tears streaming down her face. “I was worried sick about you Sierra, you almost died!” She cried feely. “I know I need to be strong for you right now but I can’t! I can’t believe I hadn’t noticed what you were going though! How could I be so stupid?! You told me that a man was stalking you-“ A knock on the door cut Kayla off and honestly, I was glad it did. I couldn’t look her in the eyes.
