When the bell rings at 2:45 I meet up with Alec at his locker. He is just putting his textbooks away when I get there.
"Hey Alec" I smile. He closes his locker loudly.
"Hey Liv! Ready to go?" He asks me happily. I nod and we race eachother out the door.At Alec's house we are sitting on his bed playing Mario 64 on his Game Cube when he brings up a touchy subject.
"Remember when we kissed in sixth grade?" He asks me suddenly. I freeze.
"Um, yeah. I do" I say cautiously. Alec doesn't take his eyes off the game.
"I was thinking about it earlier today" he tells me. I am really confused. Where is he going with this?
"I thought that we were totally in love, you know. We kissed beside the water fountain, actually, then we held hands and walked back to class" he pauses the game, puts down his controller and looks at me. I search his eyes for some kind of emotion, but he's a blank slate.
"And now I see you and Jack, and I think, wow, they are so in love. I realize that I want that. I want a girlfriend. I want to be loved" his voice cracks and he looks down. I take his hand.
"Alec, I love you like a brother. And besides, you'll find your perfect girl some day" I say softly. He looks up at me and I smile. He returns it.
"Lets get back to the game! I was almost done defeating Bowser!" I say loudly. Alec laughs and unpauses the game. The next day at school I walk with Marisa and Riley to gym. When we get there, Amanda and her friends are sitting on the bleachers, filing their nails and chewing pink bubblegum. When we walk by them Amanda looks up and scowls at me. With our heads held high we go to the change room and change into our gym clothes. With my hair in a ponytail and changed into a mint green LuluLemon tank top and gray shorts we head back into the gym. I find Jack ignoring the school jerk, Chris Kerans. I cautiously make my way over to Jack but I stop when I hear someone say my name.
"Hey, Olivia. Looks like you got yourself a boyfriend! How long until he proposes?" I look up and see Chris smirking at me. I roll my eyes at him.
"Seriously, Chris? Taunting me? I wouldn't be using the dating taunt against people, since you can't even get a girl" I say flatly. He looks angry but turns away. I sit down beside Jack just as Mr. Evans blows his whistle loudly.
"All right, gym rats", he yells "we're going to be playing volleyball today. Follow me to the outdoor nets". Everyone obeys without objections. Outside, Mr. Evans divides us into 4 teams. I smile when I see Jack in the court beside me. My light mood is darkened when Amanda struts to the court across from me, the opposing team. Now I want to win so badly. Volleyball is my favorite sport, so I'm pretty confident. Mr. Evans tosses me the ball so I can serve. After a long rally my team is winning by 11 points. We rotate and I'm moved to the front line, identical to Amanda. I scowl at her. The ball is served and I bump it over the net to Amanda. She takes the opportunity to spike it directly at my head. I feel pain for a second, then I collapse on the ground and everything goes black. When my eyelids flutter open the harsh light blinds me. Once my vision adjusts I see a familiar face hovering over me. I reach out and touch his cheek.
"Jack. Where am I? What time is it? What happened?" I bombard him with questions. He grabs my hand and smiles at me.
"Liv, you're in the nurse's room. Amanda hit you really hard in the head with a volleyball and you've been out for a few hours" he tells me. I close my eyes in disgust.
"Ugh, Amanda. I guess this is her revenge for what happened yesterday". I look up at Jack and he is eyeing me nervously.
"Olivia Anne West", he says sounding like my mom "you can't get into fights like this, or you'll end up dead" he smiles and sits down on the edge of the bed. Before I can say anything else he leans over and kisses me. His lips are warm and sweet. I smile and pull him onto the cot bed. Jack rolls me over so I'm on top of him. We stop kissing when a noise comes from outside the door. I pull away and look at him. His eyes have lightened to the color of honey. I smile and get up from the bed, but quickly sit back down when my head throbs. Jack is instantly by my side, steadying me.
"Woah, Liv. Sit down. You're not completely better yet" he says, putting his hand up to my forehead. I look him in the eye.
"But you make me feel better" I say. He takes his hand and puts it up against my cheek. I press my forehead gingerly against his. Our lips brush lightly. We are interrupted when the door swings open. I hear someone clear their throat and I look up. The nurse, Mrs. Hanley, is standing in the doorway. Jack looks between her and I, nods smugly, and leaves the room. Mrs. Hanley takes a clipboard off the counter and reads it. She pulls a pen out from behind her ear and scribbles down a note.
"Well, Mrs. Olivia, you have to stay here for a while. It's only 1:00, so you have to stay here until 2:45" she says matterofactly. I lean back against the pillows. This is going to be the longest hour and forty-five minutes of my life. Mrs. Hanley hands me an ice pack.
"Here, put this on your head. It'll help with the pain" she says. I take it and press it against my forehead. Cold runs through my body. Without another word, Mrs. Hanley leaves the room and closes the door harshly behind her.I pass the time by studying for an upcoming test. My friends come by once when they skip class and they drop off my stuff. I change into yoga pants and a college sweatshirt that I find in my locker. Jack comes by at 2:45 to pick me up. I hear a knock on the door and he emerges into the small sterile nurse's room.
"Hey!" He greets me. I can tell that something is wrong.
"Aw, Jack, what's wrong?" I ask softly. He sticks his thumbs in the pockets of his jeans.
"Just a problem with Matt. He says if I won't break up with you and let him date you, we can't be friends anymore" he tells me. I walk over to him and wrap my arms around him.
"Baby, you chose me?", I ask him in disbelief "I thought you and Matt were inseparable like Anna and I". He pulls away and looks me hard in the eye.
"Liv, I wouldn't choose anyone over you" he says quietly, almost a whisper.
"But-" I start but Jack presses his finger to my lips.
"Olivia Anne West. I'm not discussing this anymore with you" he says finally. I pull his finger away from my lips and put my hand up to his cheek. I press my lips against his. Bliss. At dinner that night I sit awkwardly between my parents.
"So, I didn't tell you what happened today at school. I got hit in the head by a volleyball and I passed out" I say, trying to bring some life to the table. Not a particularly happy subject, but still a subject. My dad drops his fork.
"Olivia, that's not good! How are you feeling?" He asks me wildly. I shrug while I chew my steak.
"Not too bad. My head hurts a bit" I say casually. My mom shakes her head.
"Quit getting into trouble, Olivia Anne" she teases me lightly. I bump her shoulder softly and smile. The rest of the dinner is 10x more pleasant after my weird story. When I'm lying in bed on my phone I get a call from Riley. I pick it up on the first ring.
"Hello?"
Hey Liv.
"What's up Riles?"
We need to talk.
"About what?"
About Jack.
"I don't understand"
I was talking with Matt today, and he said that Jack isn't who you think he is. He'll play you.
"Riley, you don't know who you're talking about. Jack and I are perfect together"
No, you aren't. You need to break up with him before something happens.
"Riley, no. You're probably just saying this because you're jealous"
Olivia, do you think I would do that? We're best friends!
"Are we? I'm not so sure. You're trying to steal my boyfriend for god sakes!"
I'm not! Holy crap, will you just listen to me?! Break up with Jack, and don't say I didn't warn you.
The line goes dead before I can reply. What just happened? Did I just lose a friend? What's next for me? I don't sleep that night._________________________
