I walk to school the next day dressed up a little fancier in a skirt, knee high socks, a collared tank top and combat boots. The clouds have cleared so the sun is shining through the almost bare tree branches. Well, even Mother Nature is feeling a bit better today. I enter the school and immediately bump into Krystal. She grabs my hands.
"Hey, Liv! How are you feeling today?" she asks. I shrug and smile.
"Better. I know I've got people that really care about me" I say. She grins.
"Great to hear! Loving the outfit today, too!" she exclaims. I laugh.
"Thanks, Krys!". She smiles and we link arms, walking to class.
In the middle of second period, an announcement comes on.
"Excuse the interruption, can Olivia West come see me in my office? Thank you". Mr. Gordon's voice echoes booms over the P.A. system. Everyone in my class lets out a synchronized "oooooh". I roll my eyes as I gather my stuff and walk into the hallway.
Outside Mr. Gordon's office, I sit on a hard wooden bench, tapping my fingers lightly on the railing. The door opens and the principal comes out.
"Miss West! Please come in!" he says and gestures for me to enter his office. I timidly stand up and walk through the doorway. He shuts the door lightly behind me and sits down across from me at his desk.
"I heard that your parents are getting divorced", he says, "is that true?". I nod, emptiness filling me up again.
"If you ever need to talk with someone about it during the day, I've informed our school's student counsellor of your situation. How are you doing right now?" he asks. I shrug.
"Not too bad. A lot better than yesterday, for sure" I say. He nods.
"Good to hear. Lunch will be starting soon. Maybe if you leave now you'll get first pick of food in the cafeteria" he jokes. I laugh. We stand up and Mr. Gordon opens the door for me. I mutter a "thank you" and walk to the cafeteria.
For lunch, I treat myself to a piece of strawberry shortcake, because why not? I sit down beside Marisa and dig my fork into it, savoring the sweet strawberry crème.
"Careful, honey. We wouldn't want you to put on too much more extra weight. You can't just eat away your feelings". An icy voice comes from behind me. Instead of replying back and wasting my breath, I let Amanda stand there looking like an idiot. I hear a scoff and the sound of heels clicking on the floor and she's gone.
"Good one" Marisa whispers to me. I smirk and look at her.
"Thanks", I say, "I think I'm getting my mojo back". Marisa laughs. I smile and keep eating, not bothered by Amanda's bitchiness anymore.
After school I decide to go for a walk by myself, just to clear my head. I make my way down a nearby gravel pathway that leads to a small lake where my dad used to take me fishing when I was younger. I walk to the edge of the wooden dock and sit there, crosslegged. With my book on my lap and my Starbucks latte beside me I read, think, and watch ducks swim around. Nice and quiet. Perfect for confusion. At around 4:00 I start walking to Jack's house. Sure it's nice to be alone, but not lonely. I just need someone to talk to and be around. He's perfect for that.
I knock softly on Jack's front door. It swings open, revealing his dad, Mike. He smiles at me.
"Hi, Olivia! It's so nice to see you" he says. I smile.
"It's nice to see you too" I say.
"I assume you're here to see Jack, right?" he asks me. I nod.
"That's correct. Despite how cool you are, I'm here for your son". He shrugs.
"I'll take that" , he laughs, "I got off early from work today and Jack has no idea that I'm home, but I'm assuming he's in his room. Go right on up!". I smile.
"Thanks Mike!". I walk quietly up the carpeted stairs and into the hall. I stop in front of the door where the radio is playing softly, also known as Jack's room. The door is open just about an inch, so I push it open more. What I see when the door opens almost makes me faint: Jack kissing another girl.
