Chapter 1: Boring Ol' Life
'Good thing you came in, Detective. Not that we haven't sorted it out. This is a clear case of breaking and entering, property damage and gun-firing,' said Sergeant David Clark.'Nice to hear that, sergeant. Fill me in,' Detective Lee Sanchez replied. He had been called upon to look into the complaint of a historical artefact collector and trader. He had just finished his breakfast when the captain had called and instructed him to take charge of the case. 'Case, my ass,' he had grumbled into the phone and had made his way to the so-called "crime scene". Now he wondered when all this dilly-dallying will be over and he would get a real case. But for now, he had to make do with a stupid forced entry case.
The sergeant interrupted his trance, 'Mr Scott Morris here filed a complaint of forced entry into his antique store. He had some urgent business yesterday evening out of town. He came back at around seven and found that his shop had been broken into. On further checking, he found that one of his antique mirrors had been fired at with a gun. We searched the place for evidence and found this.'
He showed a clear plastic bag which contained something which was gleaming. On a closer look, Detective Sanchez saw it was a ring—not some random wedding or engagement ring—but an elaborate steel one with a fake red stone in the centre, which seemed to be clutched by two sets of claws on either side, with four fingers on each. Probably owned by one of those punk kids—not worth more than a buck or two. He wondered what it was doing amidst all that old crap lying around.
'We picked it up because it seemed out of place amongst the usual antique items in this shop.' Sergeant Clark said as if reading his thoughts. 'Mr Morris states that he had seen this ring before on the finger of an assistant from a rival shop and claims he had been sent to destroy his most valuable piece, that'll be the mirror. That assistant, Ross Sanders, is under arrest now. The mirror is still in the shop in its original position.'
Great, let's proceed to admire ourselves in a mirror, thought Sanchez. Of all the things that could have been attacked, the "assailant" chose to damage a freakin' mirror. But he decided to investigate the matter anyhow. He was interested as to why would someone attack a mirror. Not that it would harm him in any way, and as it was he craved for some interest in his boring life.
'I see. I'll interrogate this Scott Morris now. Not at the station, take me to his office.'
