Chapter 26: Green Light
It was raining. Sanchez was fiddling with the object Victoria had placed in his pocket. It was that ring which he had given to her, asking her to marry him. The sight of it brought back the most unpleasant memories. Even though he hated Victoria now, he could not stop loving the Kimberly he had known. He did not know what to do with it—neither could he bring himself to throw it away nor could he summon the courage to face it. Mindlessly, he kept it inside his pant pocket.
The road they were travelling on didn't usually see more than two or three cars at a time, but now the traffic was heavy. Their car seemed to proceed slower than a snail. They felt stuck inside. At last, they reached their destination, beloved Roxlow. If it hadn't been for the big-faced wall clock hung at the entrance of the police station, they would have thought it had been ages since they left Vernolee.
Sanchez and Clark had dropped Curreri at his house. He had courteously invited them in for drinks but they had politely refused, saying that they had a lot of work in hand now. He had understood. They had thanked him for sticking with them the whole lot of time and had driven their way back. On the way back, Sanchez had praised Clark for thinking about taking Curreri and they had also decided how to present the video clips to the Chief. They were sure he just couldn't ignore that much of evidence.
It was late. Sanchez had asked someone at the station if the Chief was still in. Yes, he was. Now, they were standing in front of a door. In big bold letters, the door announced the identity of the occupant of the cabin. Leon Dillard, Chief of Police, Municipality of Roxlow. 'Let's do this,' Sanchez said and knocked at the door.
'Come in.' They went inside. The Chief looked up from his work and did not fail to betray a hint of annoyance at the sight of the two. 'I see you've come back from wherever you went, you two. May I request for a reason of your absence?' he mocked.
And the reasons they gave.

Sanchez stood with his arms folded across his chest and Clark wore a smug smile on his face. They had explained (almost) every tiny bit about their little adventure in Vernolee to the Chief. The Chief's expression had darkened by and by as he realized that he could not ignore the evidence in front of him any longer. Now they waited for the verdict.
The Chief had to sigh at last. 'You two have not left any stone unturned to convince me of—whatever this mess is. And this, all this is fantastic. Such an elaborate plan. Unthinkable. I guess I have to give you the green light now. You can re-open the case. And you have to let Morris out, I guess. You've heard what you've wanted to, now scoot.'
Both of them were smiling as they went out. They had tasted their first flavours of success.
