I covered the entrance to the jungle temple with dirt blocks just as the sun vanished over the horizon. Alex was sitting behide me on a cobblestone brick, carefully removing her make shift bandage from the cut. As she peeled the fabric back, she flinched because the blood had dried the fabric to her skin. I got her a wet rag to clean it with and and she gave me a half smile.
Dammit! That smile of drives me crazy! I smiled back at her and handed her the actual bandages. As she wrapped her leg back up, I saw it turn a little red because the bleeding had started back up. Walking over to the window, I looked out as it started raining. Alex walked up beside me and leaned her head on the window sill. A zombie spawned outside and after a minute she drew her bow. Pulling it back, she head shot the zombie, which left behide nothing.
"You were always the good one when it came to archery. I was better when it came to melee combat." I said, looking at her.
She chuckled, "yeah, people would tease us and say Archer x knight when we would walk by." She covered her mouth with her hand and laughed. "Now I see we should have accepted it... Rather then deny it." She smiled again and stared up at the clouds.
I looked at her. Man, she's changed since we got here, I thought. When we got here, she had a hoodie, new jeans, brushed hair with a vibrant red rim. Now, she was wearing one of my hats, her dyed hair was losing it's color, her tank top was torn enough to show her whole stomach, 3/4 of her left pantleg was missing, and she wore bandages around her leg, and all together, it made her look like a badass. She looked over and caught me staring.
"What're you staring at?" She laughed.
"You..." I walked over to the other side of the temple and set up a bed. I layed down with my arms crossed behide my head. I closed my eyes and felt Alex lay next to me, then I felt a poke on my side. "Mmm.... Wha?" I asked, already half asleep.
"Nothing, just wanna poke you..." I felt her roll over and away from me, so I rolled over but wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her as close as I could possibly get her. I dozed off to the sound of rain outside and Alex in my arms.
The next morning when I woke up, Alex wasn't in bed with me. "Mmm... Alex?" I mumbled, opening my eyes. Sitting up and looking around, I still didn't see her. "Alex?" I said, slightly frantic. That's when I saw the hole in the door. I bolted out the door and looked around wildly.
"Alex!!" I called as I ran around the temple. "Alex?! Alex!!" I said, tears starting to well up. I wiped them away when one ran down my cheek. She bust out of the treeline and bolted to the temple. I gave her a confused look when she popped her head out. I looked where she had come from and saw a horde of 60, maybe 70 husks. "Not again..." I said and ran inside the house blocking the door up. I felt Alex behide me and spun around and held her tight to my chest.
I let the tears come because I knew I might have just lost Alex, and I was happy I hadn't. She hugged me back and started crying too. I broke away and wiped her tears away as they came.
"Don't do that to me... You scared the fuck outta me!" I said, worried about her.
"I-I'm s-sorry..." She said, her normal red eye seemed to dim in color.
"For what?"
"For scaring you... I didn't mean to..." She stammed. I pulled her close again and just stood there with her as she cried into my shoulder. The bare skin of her back felt weird, mainly because I'd never even dreamed of touching it before, but here I was. As we broke apart, a creeper spawned right behide Alex.
"MOVE!!!" I shouted, and shoved her hard out of the explotion radius. I however, got a foot away. I was thrown into the wall, my head hitting it first.
"Max!" I heard Alex scream my name as I hit the floor. She slid over to me on her knees then lifted my head into her lap. I felt my heart beat slow and heard Alex screaming my name as the world faded away.
