The gunshot sounded and Dad’s body fell to the ground. I rushed over to him. His eyes closed instantly as soon as I reached him. I waited for the laugh from the killer, but instead of the laugh I heard a scream. It sounded like Marley. She was in trouble.
I flung my eyes opened. Marley was in the chair beside me, screaming in her sleep. I quickly got up and woke her up before a nurse comes in and wonders what the screaming is all about. J.J. was up and asking me what was wrong.
I shook her gently. “Marley, Marley, wake up.”
Marley opened her eyes and as soon as she saw me, she wrapped her arms around me tightly.
“Are you okay, Marley?” J.J. asked her sister.
Marley nodded. “Yeah, it was just a nightmare I was having. I’m okay.”
J.J. smiled at her sister and then went back to sleep. I was about to go sit back in my own chair, but Marley wanted me to sit on her lap. I did, even though I was unsure what J.J. might think. I stroke her cheek as she glazed into my eyes.
“Do you want to tell me what you were dreaming about?” I asked her.
I could see it in her eyes of how scared she looked and I knew her dream had something to do with the killer. I couldn’t imagine what kind of nightmares she must have of him.
“I dreamt about him,” she told me, talking softly so her sister couldn’t hear. “He was doing a lot of horrible stuff to me that I do not want to say at all.”
“Then don’t say them.” I stroke her hair. “Forget about him. The nightmare is over. You’re with me now and I will make sure he doesn’t get you.”
She smiled and then kissed me softly. I then got off her, making her stand up and then sat down, allowing her to sit on my lap. She rested her head on my shoulder while I wrapped my arms tightly around her. I told her to sleep. She did and I watched over both of the sisters.
Eric came by in the morning so he could take over and watch over J.J. The doctor said that she may be coming home tonight. I took Marley home and she went to take a shower. I joined Chloe in the kitchen where she was sipping a cup of tea. I kissed her good morning.
“How’s J.J.?” she asked.
“She is doing okay. She should be coming home today.” I headed over to the coffee maker and made myself a coffee.
The phone rang. I answered it to find Chief on the other end of the phone.
“Reese, I need you and Swift to come down to the station. We found the driver who had hit J.J.”
“That’s great. We will be there soon.” I hung up the phone and turned to Chloe. I told her what our boss wanted.
“We are going now?”
“Yeah.”
“What are we going to do with Marley? We can’t leave her here and if we take her to the station, she will find out that we are agents.”
“Well, she has class today. She should be alright there.” Truthfully I wasn’t sure if she would be safe, but hopefully she is.
Chloe went to tell Marley where we were going. We dropped her off the university and then headed to the station. We greeted our workmates and then headed into Chief Parker’s office, taking a seat in front of his desk.
He handed us a mug shot. “We tracked down Jairo Camarillo last night. We tried to question him about last night, but he doesn’t seem to know what had happened.”
