He didn’t return and I’m thankful for that. Each time I saw a shadow or heard someone walk by I kept thinking it was the killer coming back to finish me off, but thank goodness it wasn’t.
I was glad once I was out of hospital. I don’t think I could stand another moment being there. Eric still hadn’t come to see me at the hospital, but as soon as I return home he hugged me as soon as I walked through the door. My chest still hurt a little but not as much. J.J. also greeted me with a hug.
I looked around the room for Marley. She was anywhere to be seen. “Where’s Marley?”
“She is just taking a nap,” J.J. answered. “Hey, now that you and Chloe are home is it alright that Eric and I go to the movies?”
“Okay, but be sure to be home by dinner,” Chloe said. “I’m making a special dinner tonight for Noah.”
The two of them agree to return home in time. I had this smile on my face and just shook my head, wondering what they really up to. Eric caught my smile and returned it before slipping out the door with J.J.
Chloe wrapped her arms around me once they were gone, slipping a hand under my shirt and rubbed my stomach. “So, what would you like to do?”
“I was thinking of resting for a bit.” Actually I really want to see Marley. She is all I could think about while I was in hospital.
Chloe smiled. “Okay, good. And when you wake up, you’re going to love the meal that I have cooked for you.”
I turned around to face her. “What are you cooking?”
“It’s a surprise.”
I smiled and then kissed her before she left me and entered the kitchen. Rather than heading to my room, I headed to see how Marley was. I knocked on the door softly but no one answered. I opened it to see her lying there on top of the covers. I closed the door and walked over to her, sitting down beside her.
I watched as she slept peacefully, not even knowing that I was in the same room as her. I didn’t get to see her much for the past few days. She had come to visit me a couple of times, but mostly she was busy with school. Chloe had been going to the university to keep an eye on her.
I reached out and ran my fingers through her hair. It felt so soft against my fingers. I then stroke her cheek, her eyes slowly opened. She stared at me sleepily and then smiled.
“Noah, you are home.” She sat up and hugged me, kissing me softly.
“Yeah, I just got home a few minutes ago.”
“I miss you.” She cupped a hand on my jaw.
“I miss you too.”
“How’s your wound?”
“It’s fine.” I noticed the bags under her eyes. “You look like you haven’t been sleeping well.”
“I haven’t. I have been up mostly thinking about you and the attacker.” A tear appeared in her eyes. “I had a nightmare about him last night.”
I pulled her close to me and hugged her. “It’s okay, Marley. I’m here to protect you, remember? He isn’t going to come after you anymore.”
“He scares me.”
I rubbed a hand up and down her back. “I know he does, Marley. Listen, I’m going to go now and you get some sleep.”
Marley held onto me tightly. “No. Please don’t leave me. Please stay with me until I fall asleep. Having you next to me might be able to keep me from having nightmares.”
