I went to scramble to my feet to stop Nathaniel, but as soon as I went to stand, pain shot up through my leg. I cursed out loud, squeezing my eyes shut and biting down on my lip. Tayvon curled up beside me. J.J. crawled over to me.

“Oh God, are you okay, Noah?” she asked.

I didn’t answer her question. Instead I said, “Help me up, J.J. I have to save them. I have to make sure Nathaniel doesn’t do anything to them.”

J.J. wouldn’t let me get up. “No. You can’t go after them. And even if you do, your ankle is broken. Nathaniel will make sure you don’t catch them.”

“I don’t care. I have to save them both. Where’s my gun?” I looked around for it. It was to my left and I went to reach for it, but J.J. grabbed it for me. “Help me up.”

J.J. helped me up. I couldn’t put any weight on my right ankle. I put an arm around J.J. while her arm went around my waist. Her shoulder was aching, but she didn’t let the pain get to her as she held me up.

“Where do you think he is taking them?” J.J. asked me.

I shook my head. “I have no idea. All I know is he is going to kill them if we don’t stop them.”

“Are you sure you really want to follow them? Maybe we should wait for someone to come and take you to the hospital.”

“No. We have to get to them now otherwise they will be dead and Nathaniel will get away. I don’t care if my ankle is broken, but I need to get to him. I have to fight him.”

J.J. didn’t ask me anymore questions. She helped me walked. We were slow as I limped along. I heard Marley screaming and I knew we had to hurry. I just wished that my ankle wasn’t broken. No doubt I would be running through these woods until I found her and Chloe.

We followed her scream, heading towards a cliff. Suddenly gunshots were shot at us. J.J. quickly hid me behind a tree, causing more intense pain to run through my ankle. I bit down on my lip hard to stop myself from screaming out loud. I had bitten down on my lip hard and caused it to bleed a little.

“You never know when to give up, do you Noah?” I heard Nathaniel say.

I rest my back up against a tree trunk and stretch out my leg, trying my best to keep it still.

“J.J., I need you to stay behind this tree, you hear me?” I said to her. “Do not move from behind here. It’s going to get ugly out there and I don’t want anything to happen to you.”

I could see that J.J. didn’t really want me to go out there and fight my brother. But at the same time she knew I had to do what I had to do. I had to protect her, Chloe and Marley. I didn’t care what I was going to happen to me.

J.J. helped me off the ground and check to see how much bullets I had. I reloaded them and then emerged from behind the tree. Nathaniel was standing near the cliff, his arms strapped around both Chloe and Marley their throats so they couldn’t move. Both of their girls were trying to stop Nathaniel from choking them. Fear was written in their eyes and I was scared of knowing what Nathaniel was planning to do with them.

Dad’s death played over and over my head as I heard the gunshot and him collapsing to the ground right in front of me. I couldn’t shake it from my mind and I knew if I didn’t do anything soon, Marley and Chloe will be in the same position.

“Let them go, Nathaniel,” I told them. “Just give it up already. You know it’s all going to end soon.”

“No. It will end for you.”

I aimed my weapon at him. “Don’t make me shoot you.”

He moved backwards, dragging Marley and Chloe closer to the edge.
