Chapter Five

I hate Mrs. Alferes. She gives us homework up until the day grades are due. Class would be much more bearable if I just sat next to Jacob.

At least Delaney has all but two of her classes with Jacob. I have 3 classes with Jacob, and two of them have Delaney in it.

I trudge to Algebra, not quite sure what to think of that predicament. Instead I worry about the algebra homework. I know I got all of them right, but I really would like to write my answers up on the whiteboard, and explain to the class how I got them, but Mrs. Alferes doesn't really call on me.

God, I am such a nerd.

I opened the door and caught Jacob's eye. I think he smiles but I quickly look away and feel my face burn red.

News flash, I'm also easily embarrassed.

Delaney sits next to me in algebra, and she gives me another fake smile, but this time I try my best to fake-smile back. I've suddenly decided to beat her at her own game. You know, start sweetly insulting her and flirting with Jacob.

Okay, maybe not the second part. My face would turn fire-engine red for sure.

Since Delaney doesn't sit by Jacob in algebra, (we have the same seats from the beginning of the year, when nobody knew each other) she can't drool all over him, which is good for me. But that also means that I don't sit by Jacob.

Well, you can't have everything. And what would we even talk about anyways? See, I'm no good at this.

"Bertha? You're staring" Heather whispers from her seat behind me. My face turns red again. I've been unconsciously staring at Jacob.

Heather laughs and says "you like himmmm."

"You already know this!"

"Reminds me of me when i was your age...." Heather used to date this kid named Albert. He is a Sometimes Butthole. Enough said.

"I'm older than you!" I laughed.

"Yeah but you still act like a little fetus!"

"Shut up!"

"Fine I will, but you're missing out on a lot of information about crushes from a person who knows a whole lot about them..." She sing-songed.

"Okay, I do have one question. How do you know if someone likes you?"

She laughed. "Well, they look at you a lot, for one thing. They also talk to you a lot, and at least pretend to seem interested in you. Have you even talked to Jacob today?"

"Yes, I have." I curtly informed her. "As a matter of fact, he walked me to Spanish this morning.

Her eyes widened. "Really? Tell me every single detail."

As I repeated the events to Heather, she grew a smile on her face.

"Why are you smiling?"

"I would say he likes you..." she trailed off.

"Really?!?" My insides were bursting with excitement. "Do you really think so?!?"

"...if he didn't have a girlfriend."

My face fell.

"But she's kind of clingy and he seems annoyed by it, so who knows?"

"How do I make him notice me?"

Her eyes lit up with a fiendish delight.

"Heather..?"

"Come over to my house on Sunday. We're giving you a makeover!"

"Oh uh... ok? What do you mean by we?"

"You'll see.."

"Okay I guess."
