Chapter 17

(Normal POV)

'I've found my mate.' Was all that repeated in Mephiles' head, as they were sitting in a meeting. Shadow tried his best not to show his pain as he sat, but everyone could tell he was pushing himself.

"Sire, I really think you should be resting, you haven't let the healers look at you since you've been here." One of the servants in the room said, very concerned for their king.

"He's right Shadow... You should just throw yourself back into things. You haven't even let your body heal itself." Mephiles added, watching every move.

"I can't rest... Not until I get back to him..." Shadow tried to push himself up, only to collapse back down. The others in the room quickly swam to his side, scared for their king. Shadow's breath was shaky, curling up in pain.

"That's it. Shadow, I'm ordering you to be bedrest until your back to full health." Mephiles stood tall, "You are not permitted to leave your room unless I am with you, or I say you are otherwise. Do you understand?" Shadow scoffed, yet he knew his younger brother was right.

"Y-Yes brother..." Shadow cringed in pain as a few of the servants picked him up, helping him to his room.

Mephiles sighed as he followed, wondering what he was going to do with him. He couldn't deal with another death within the family, not just yet. The brothers were still in mourning, as why Mephiles was so worried for his brother's safety.

With the amount of stress of being king, Mephiles wasn't as shocked to find a few grey hairs within the months he ruled. Mephiles didn't know how Shadow remained so calm and how caring he was towards the people. How every second they depend on your word. He wasn't looking forward to becoming king just yet.

"Have the nearest healer come to the castle immediately. Hurry." Mephiles stopped a nearby servant, as they nodded, swimming as fast as they could.

Mephiles watched as they took care of his brother, before returning to his duties. He still had to rule as king until his brother was in a better state. As for now, Mephiles had to tuck away the questions he was so desperately wanting to ask for later. He still couldn't help but wonder... Who was this mate Shadow was wanting to get back to? What made Shadow stay for months?

(Back at Sonic's house)

Sonic was a nervous wreck as he paced back and forth. Tails was starting to worry about Sonic's health now. It's been hours since they let Shadow go, and Sonic was a non stop reck. He hasn't touched food, or even sat down since he got home.

"Sonic, how about eating something?" Tails was making dinner as he watched Sonic.

"I'm not hungry.." Tails groaned, as he quietly ate. There was no way he can force Sonic too eat.

"Can you at least calm down? Don't overwork yourself." Sonic collapsed into a chair, holding his head. Tails quietly ate, not wanting to bother him.

"Why can't I remember him?" Sonic broke the silence.

"What are you-" Tails started, confused.

"I know, I know him. He's special. Something between us happened. There's something about him..." Sonic's eyes drifted to the floor. "But why can't I remember him..?"

"Sonic..." He sighed was Sonic looked at him with pleading eyes. "It's like the doctor said... When you got sick, it must of infected your memory..."

"But what about him." Sonic said it more as in a statement not a question.

" ... You loved him." Tails took a sip from his coffee as Sonic's eyes widen. "You fell in love with him... As he did to you."

Sonic looked like he was going to say something, but he couldn't get it out. As they sat in silence, Tails finished eating.

"Is that what Silver was trying to say?" Tails stayed silent, not know how to answer his big brother.

"How about you just get some rest... Silver said he'd be back within a few days time." Tails rushed out of the room, before Sonic could protest.

Sonic was alone with his thoughts, trying to process everything. He couldn't wait a few days for answers, and he couldn't wait for Shadow. For all he know, Shadow could be dead. Shadow might have never made it to his home, and Sonic would never know.

Even though he wanted to protest again his brother, Sonic went to bed. Even though he could barely even sleep, he just laid there, lost in thought. The same things kept popping up in his head, faded memories he had experience. Sonic knew Shadow was special to him. He kept having faint flashbacks of him, none of them showing much detail.

Deep down, Sonic knew that he loved him. But what broke his heart even more, is that he didn't remember him. He can't remember him, he CAN'T remember the last ten years. Sonic was desperately trying to remember. To try and believe Shadow was going to be okay.

But nothing worked, in the back of his mind, Sonic lost to his thoughts. He knew Shadow wouldn't come back, as all his time here, Sonic forgot. He had lost Shadow forever, from either death, or from breaking his heart... Sonic didn't get much sleep from that night.
