⌠CHASING MEMORY⌡
❝there are happy moments but no happy periods in history.❞⇣⇣⇣
SUNBEAM SKULKED THROUGH the interstice of the curtains, attempting to illumine the room covered with opacity. Sapphira Ryle sat silently on the couch, embracing the darkness as if it was a coverlet as she took a hold of her journal. Her mind was absolutely erratic at the moment—the pen in her hand became the object she most relied on to ease the burden. Never in million years, Sapphira imagined her life would be based on arduous choices. It was broad daylight, but she felt she had been caught in the fuscous of night. Her husband was off to work—it instantly reminded her that she had been absent for several days with the excuse of taking care of her ailing child. It was actually true though.
Eustacia Ryle had been sick quite a long time and even though both Sapphira and Haggen were well paid, their finance was never stable again since their oldest daughter was convicted. They were so desperate to expect their child to recover, but Eustacia's worsening condition said otherwise. Unfortunately, unlike her husband who still kept a great amount of positivity and hope, Sapphira instead depended more on shortcuts. And surely, it brought a profound quantum of remorse to her life.
The sound of the open door startled her as Sapphira swiftly wiped away the tears that she had not realized had fallen. Not long after, her youngest daughter showed up with her usual bright smile, normally Sapphira would automatically return the gesture, however this time, it felt completely wrong. Her heart crushed in torment, knowing that the smile wouldn't last forever. Evangeline was a smart, loyal and amiable kid—also selfless, the fact that she was willing to exchange her respiratory organs with her sister made Sapphira feel like she had unsuccessful in parenting. Of course, they didn't allow her and instead said that everything would be fine, which was a mere falsehood.
"Mom," Evangeline dropped her bag on the table and rushed to her mother, a smile still planting on her lips. "Peter, Aunt May and Uncle Ben will come to see Staci later tonight, is that okay?"
Silence fell down between them for a good two minutes, causing the little girl started to feel it was a bad idea to ask her mother that. However, instead of answering, Sapphira lifted a hand and caressed her cheek softly, as if she was carving her face into her memory. Evangeline's smile instantly dropped as she saw tears deluging her mother's eyes, the thought of having Peter around the house directly forgotten.
Honestly deep inside, all Evangeline needed right now was a friend, sure she had a lot at school, but once she got home she felt incredibly lonely because usually, Eustacia was the one who played with her. The youngest Ryle needed a bunch of consolation, seeing the situation at home now was only a cavity of misery—but, finding her mother crying in front of her, Evangeline could not stop herself from thinking something unsavory had happened.
