We returned to the house, talking and laughing, taking everyone by surprise. They watched us as Grayson looked at me. "Thanks, Maggie. That was a lot of fun."
"You're welcome, Grayson," I smiled back.
Their jaws dropped as Nash and Nixon mouthed "fun" to each other.
Grayson went upstairs, and I stood there, looking at them. "What?"
"Dear, what did you do to my husband?" Lucille asked me.
"Well, we went to miniature golf, but that was a bust. Then go-carts, and that was horrible. Grayson tried to get me on the zip line, and that was a no. Finally, the trampolines and it was terrible. Then I suggested an arcade."
"An arcade?"
"Yeah, because all boys like video games. Who knew Grayson was such a gamer?" I said, walking by them.
"Video games?" The boys said to each other. Then they stopped me.
"You took our grandpa to an arcade?" Nash asked me.
"Yep," I said.
"And he played?" Nixon asked.
"Uh, huh?"
"And he laughed?" Nathan asked.
"Yes," I said.
"You got him to smile?" Noah said.
I nodded.
"Did you drug him?" Nolan asked. We looked at him. "What? It's a fair question."
I shook my head. "Yes, I took him to an arcade, then we went for a burger and talked. Grayson likes to have fun, but because he's worried about his sons and making sure they are doing well, it doesn't give him a lot of time to be fun. Understand?"
They all looked at me like it was a foreign concept. I rolled my eyes.
"Being double responsible equals no fun," I said, looking at Lucille, Nate, and Pat.
I watched as guilt washed over them. Lucille was busy being the fun one, and their sons were so busy getting into trouble that they forgot that Grayson needed a little fun in his life. I walked up to my room and decided I needed a nap. Who knew a seventy-five-year-old could wipe out an eighteen-year-old?
I don't know how long I had been sleeping, but I woke up to Nash sitting on my bed. He had his back to me as I reached up and gently touched his arm. He turned and looked at me.
"Hey," I say to him.
"Hey," he said.
"What's wrong?"
"I was thinking about what you said down there." He let out a sigh, and my brows furrowed. "Mags, I don't want to end up not being fun. I already feel like I'm no fun."
I sat up and wrapped my arms around him.
"I feel like since I'm the oldest, I expected to be the more responsible one. That's why I took off for Europe."
"What?"
"Yeah," he rubbed his forehead. "I wanted to have some freedom and fun before settling down. I look at my dad and thought he had that."
"Nash, will you look at me?" He turned and faced me. "Your dad was a lot older when he married your mom. He also got into a lot more trouble because he had no direction. I don't think that's the fun you're searching for isn't that. But you can still have fun even afterward. Your mom and dad do."
"I guess."
"There's no guessing. Have you seen your parents? They're responsible, but they also have fun. From what everyone has told me, your mom did a lot for your dad," I reassured him.
