I thought the shopping expedition was crazy, nothing beat when we went to the beach.
"Anyone see, ma?" Nate asked.
"You hoo! Watch what I can do?" We heard someone yell. We all turned, and that's when we saw it.
"Are you freaking kidding me?" Nate asked them.
"Is that ma water skiing?" Jonas asked.
"Where did she get a boat?" Cayson asked curiously.
They looked at him.
"What? It's a sweet-looking boat."
We stood there and watched her zip around on water skis. For seventy years old, she is active.
"Woohoo! This water skiing is fun! I should have done these years ago!"
I stood there with Nash. "Your Grammy is crazy."
"Wait. That isn't anything yet," Nash said to me.
"Damn, look at Grammy go," Nixon said as we watched her water ski until they came to a ramp. Oh god, I can see it now, and here lies Grammy Gray. She was a funny old lady. We watch as she went up the ramp and landed back in the water. We watched the people on the boat hold up signs with tens on them.
"At least she got a perfect score," Nixon smirked.
"Okay, boys, bring it in!" She yelled at them. They drove the boat back to where she could let fall into the water. She got out the skis and made her way to shore.
"Ma," Nate exclaimed.
"Oh, Nathaniel, you need to lighten up. I'm seventy years old. I've lived a long life. At least if I go out. I want to have some fun doing so," she said with a smile.
"I got to hand it to her. She knows how to enjoy life," I said to Nash.
"Now, let's have some fun. It is a vacation damn it," Grammy said as she walked away.
We all let loose except Karen. She was off by herself. I walked over to her and sat down. "Oh, hi, Maggie," Karen says to me.
"How come you're not with the others?" I asked her.
"Well, I didn't want to impose," she said to me.
"Have you always felt like you imposed on them?" It was an honest question.
"Well, yes."
"It's funny. I did too when my parents dumped me on the Grays."
"What?"
"My parents dumped me on the Grays last year and ran off. Said I was no longer their problem. It was hard with the boys at first. They made me feel like they didn't want me, but Nate and Pat, now they made me feel wanted."
"Really?"
"Yep, you see, I learned a lot from them over the past year. I learned their way of showing me I belonged was to tease me like the sister they never had because that's what siblings do."
"Yeah, but Jonas's brothers never did that."
"Maybe because you didn't give them a chance to. Think about it. Sometimes we have to look past the crazy to see the heart. I think Grammy Gray loves her boys so much she worries about them. I mean, isn't that what a mother does, worried about her children?" She looked at me, and I got up to join the others.
She sat there and was about to get up when she got stopped. "Sit down. We need to have a chat." She sat down, and Grammy Gray sat down next to her.
