I lay on my stomach reading Great Expectations, when someone knocked on the door.
"It's open," I yelled closing the book.
Roxy stuck her head in the door "Bridget's not here," I said. She came in anyway "I am here to see you actually."
"I just wanted to say that I was sorry for telling Bridget and Charlotte about Wyatt".
I shrugged "it's okay".
She sat down on the bed, "I don't know why I did it; I guess I thought that if Bridget found out and then she found out that I knew and didn't tell her she would cut me out and make my life a living hell."
"Sounds like some friend" I said.
"Yeah she's a keeper."
We laughed a little and then fell into an awkward silence.
"So about your name..." I said resulting to my previous attempt at conversation.
She sighed, "So it was last summer and basically I don't know what happened" she paused "actually I do. My boyfriend dumped me because I wouldn't "give out", his exact words were 'it's over, Roxanne. Roxanne What type of a loser name is that.'" She sighed heavily looking uncomfortable with the subject.
"So you and Matthew Ledwick?" she said changing the subject.
I cowered and I bit my lip "how did you know about that?"
"Everyone knows, new girl dumps hot boyfriend for loner guy."
My jaw dropped "are you serious?"
She laughed "wow you're gullible, no I saw you come to the party together yesterday."
“Yeah well I sort of ran out on him after he kissed me so there's the end of that saga."
She nodded "well you never know."
Silence passed over us for a while, "do you want to get something to eat." I nodded and stood up; anything would have gotten me to ditch Great Expectations. I was on the second chapter and didn't understand anything Dickens was saying.
"Do you think your brother likes Bridget?" she asked as we walked back from dinner. Wyatt has dated many girls like Bridget, they were actually all the girls he dated but Bridget especially, I was sure he didn't like.
"I can honestly say, no to that". My reassurance came to hold an empty meaning when we saw Bridget and Wyatt kissing in the lounge of the boy's dorm.
Before we parted I asked, "What was your boyfriend's name?" a smile peeked at her lips "Jake". My eyebrows rose. "Jake as in Bridget's boyfriend?" she nodded.
The next day, I sat at a cafeteria table after school trying to reread the first chapter Great Expectations when a coffee cup appeared on the table. I looked up Matthew was standing over me wearing his coffee shop uniform; I shifted and let him sit down.
"You'll never finish that book," he said.
"You have a lot of faith in me," I said closing it.
"Its Dickens, you'll always wonder if he actually read his own books."
"Yeah they can be really boring."
For a moment, everything was still, and silent.
"Did I bring back old feeling?" he asked.
"What?"
"When I kissed you, did I bring back old memories?" I stared blankly at him, that wasn't what I had been planning to tell him but since he brought it up "yes, yes you did".
