Wendy
After two hours of looking at dresses my feet were about to give in from under me. Nothing in any of the stores we had visited suited me in the least bit.
"What's our next stop?" Jake asked as he and the other boys hauled a million bags into the booth of the car. Even though we hadn’t found the perfect dresses, other things had still caught our eyes, especially Charlotte who seemed to be in dire need of anything sparkly she set sights on.
"It's a store about two hours away from here," Charlotte said revving up the car.
The store's name was Names. According to Charlotte, it had all the biggest names in fashion and was the best place to get a dress. As we entered, we saw a long red carpet with names like Vitally, Lauren, Gucci etc............. The whole day started again, we would try on dresses and the boys would tell us if it looked good on us or not. This system was failing to work because every time we came out in a dress they would all say in worn out groggy voices “amazing” or “buy it, it looks great.”
The place had over two thousand dresses in our budget and five thousand more not; after trying on all the dresses not in our budget, we moved to ones that were that was when we heard Roxy screamed, "This is the perfect dress."
We all walked over to her, she was staring at a gold sequin dress with spaghetti straps a low-neck line and a very high price.
"It is so beautiful," Charlotte cooed.
"Arturo vital" I added.
"$3650" my irritant of a brother said bringing us back to reality.
"I have to try it on" Roxy said ignoring my comment, she grabbed the dress and headed to the dressing room. When she came out, she came with much poise and grace. The dress hung to her every curve and shape Wyatt’s eyes nearly popped out of my head. "Now I want to cry," she said taking a glance in the mirror. She looked so good in the dress, I felt so bad that she could not afford it.
"So what are we doing leaving now?" Wyatt asked.
"Uh no we still haven't found a dress this is our last store" Charlotte replied as Roxy hung the dress back up.
We went back to trying on dresses, after Charlotte and I's fifth dress we found the perfect dress. Mine was a tight fit black strapless knee length dress while Charlotte’s was a light pink elegant gown with sequins running through it, both of them were by Lola and Nina and both cost $1500.
Roxy on the other hand rejected every single dress that she tried on, "What do you guys think of this one?" she asked coming out of the dressing room in a blue short spaghetti arm dress. "Love it" Charlotte and I said in unison, Matthew and Jake nodded in agreement it was all up to Wyatt, "um nah".
Roxy's eyes grew large shocked but she said nothing; she went back to the change room to change into a different dress. "What? That looked really good on her" I said to him "it's not the one she wants" I rolled my eyes.
Roxy came out again in a different dress, which was much better than the last one, "what are you doing? Did someone buy that dress?" she said. The store manager had in her hand the Arturo Vitally dress "I'm afraid so sweetie."
Roxy turned back to us with tears in her eyes "what do you think of this one?" Matthew Jake Charlotte and I said we loved it, "It doesn't look good on you,” he said looking her up and down.
Roxy sighed and mumbled, "I bet you'd say it'd look good on Annie," my eyes darted to Matthew.
"Really Roxy," Wyatt said.
Roxy's face darkened "well I wouldn't have to think like that if you hadn't been so judgemental about the dress."
Wyatt crossed his arms "I just said I don't love it."
"Yeah, just like you don't love me."
“Where did that come from?" I found myself ask without even realizing it.
"Yeah he might have told me that he did but I heard him tell you guys that he was so in love with Annie. Must have been why he slept with her and is so reluctant to do so with me."
"Roxy shut up" Charlotte said.
Matthew hardened beside me and turned toward Wyatt "you slept with my little sister?"
Wyatt rolled his eyes "dude you slept with mine," how did he know I did not tell him. Then I remembered he could tap into my mind whenever he wanted, I suddenly felt violated.
"Bet I was just a rebound" Roxy muttered under her breath.
Beside me, Wyatt and Matthew went at it.
"I really don't see the difference," Wyatt said.
"You two might want to shut up" Jake said.
"The difference is, Annie was freaking underage, you took advantage of her," Matthew said shouting at the top of his voice.
"You seriously might consider shutting up" Jake said again but like the first time, they completely ignored him.
"Um last I check Wendy is not 18 yet and besides it is not really taking advantage if she asks for it." Matthew grabbed him by the collar and balled up his fist ready to punch.
"Will both of you just shut the hell up" Charlotte screamed at the top of her lungs. Thunder roared, lightening crackled and rain started to pour, "Told you, told you twice" Jake said looking glum.
"You know what, whatever I'm going to get this dress," Roxy said, Wyatt stood up and walked to the door, "While you're at it get yourself a new date for prom.”
*********
Sunday morning and the rain had not stopped. I turned over groggily awakened by the drumming of the rain against my window.
"When I was a kid I used to beg for forgiveness from God whenever it rained because I'd think that God was crying because of something I did."
I sat up "I used to go to church every Sunday with my parents that stopped when we moved to L.A." Roxy was talking to me but it did not even seem like it "I mess up all my relationships one way or another;" she was a mess I could tell even in the dark. I stood up and turned on the light, walked over and sat beside her "I'll miss him."
I put my arm around her "you love him?" I asked meaning to tell her the famous quote "yeah, yeah I think I do." She leaned her head on my shoulder "well if you love something set it free, if I doesn't come back it was never yours to begin with", she looked at me "that is bullshit." I laughed gently stroking her hair.
By noon, the rain had not seized and Roxy and I were down to our last form of fun, indoor camping. We set up a tent using our bed sheets and positioned one of our study lamps to look like a campfire. We were about to sit when the door opened, and Charlotte walked in. She was in her pyjamas carrying marshmallows chocolate syrup graham crackers and six cans of coke. "I can't believe you guys are camping and you didn't call me" she set her stuff down and took a seat beside me.
We started making s'mores with warm un-melted marshmallows "so do you see anything?" Roxy asked spilling graham crackers bits on the carpet "nah can't this week aunt flo, but even if I did I wouldn't tell you because then you'd just be sitting around waiting for him to waltz back into your life" Roxy sulked.
We made a few more s'mores then started telling ghost stories, it was childish but we were bored. Charlotte went first. "A girl with hair as black as night, lips as red as rubies, skin as white as snow and eyes as blue as the sea, she wanders helplessly looking for her lost love her heart an empty pit only he could fill, she kills in her path to find, she uses and never regrets and never will till they are reunited.”
