ch. 22 My Protector and My Brother

Ch. 22

(Jade POV)

I made my way through town to the woods. I kept my hoodie up and my hands in my pockets. I also kept my head down because I didn't wear contacts. Then my left eye starts to hurt. It was like someone was pushing on it. It burned so much. I put my hand over it and kept it closed. I gritted my teeth but still walked. It was nothing compared to what I've gotten over the years.

I reached the outskirts of the town and walked on. The burning stopped but my eye felt different. I finally shrugged it off and walked through the forest. I just looked around to see if Ben was there but I senced nothing. I yelled "BEN!? BEN WHERE ARE YOU!?". Nothing came but Soul Eater started to pulse. Something was wrong. I pulled it out and waited for a sound, a move, or a sign.

A needle broke through the silent air and it missed me by a hair. I turned around quickly and saw Reth smirking "Hey there. Been a while huh?". I glared at him "Not long enough". He chuckled "Aww that's so nice". I grunted "Go away". He smirked "I thought we'd get to play?". I snorted "Hell no". He took out his sword and attacked me head on. I pulled out my dagger and blocked his attack. I tryed hitting his with Soul Stealer but missed by a inch. He jumped away and then lunged at me. I dodged and threw a knife at him. It only grazed his cheek but left a mark. I saw something sway in the wind and realized it was my picture. I took it with me and kept it in my pocket and it must have fallen out.

I growled and lunged to stab him and our blades collided. He snarled "Give up already". I glared at him "Never". He turned so that I moved forward and then he elbowed me in the back which sent me flying into a tree. I got up slowly and used Soul Stealer to help stand me up.

My eye began to sting again. I covered it and hissed "Not now". He laughed "What's wrong? Can't take a punch?". I put my hands on Soul Stealer and swung it at him. He moved away but it cut some of his front hair. I growled "Fuck off". He chuckled "Yeah yeah just after I kill you".

He pushed me against a tree with one hand at light speed "Just hold still. This won't hurt......much". I growled at him. Think quick think think think. Oh I've got nothing. He raised his sword ready to strike. I closed my eyes and waited for a final blow but none came.

I heard a loud clash of metal and opened my eyes. Darren's swords stopped Reth's right near my head. His was in neko form but his blue eyes where sharper and had a darker spark in them. He pushed Reth back and growled and swung his sword with one quick swing and was able to cut Reth's cheek. He grabbed my hand and pulled me up "You okay?". I nodded still shacken. Reth laughed "Oh I guess that's enough for today but don't worry.......I'll be back". Reth raised his hand and showed a piece of paper..........my picture! He chuckled "I guess I'll be keeping this". I cried "No don't". He shrugged "Oh well see ya" and disappeared without even looking at it. Damn it.

Tears soaked my face. He took it, he took the one thing I had left of my parents and the last.....clue.....to my brother. I tried running after Reth but Darren held me back "Let him go". I looked at Darren with tears in my eyes "H-he took i-it". He looked down at me "What was it?". I cried "My picture! It was the only thing I had left". Darren sighed and pulled me into a hug and I layed my head in the crook of his neck. He whispered in my ear "I'm sorry. Here let me take you home". He held onto my hand and lead me to my apartment. My vision blured with tears so I used my free hand to whip them away.

My ribs where broken from me hitting that tree but I ignored it. I lost my picture. I lost my family. I couldn't see their faces again. Darren was a little beaten up but other then that he looked fine.

When I got home I cleaned up my cuts and wounds. I cleaned all the dirt and leafs off and changed into clean clothes.

I was surprised to see Darren sitting on the couch waiting for me. I sat next to him without looking at him. I cluched my fists tight and kept my eyes shut. Silence fell in the room. There were no words worth saying. I lost it. My picture, the last link to my past.

Everything seemed to disappear. I felt so lost. I was in the darkness with nothing to hold onto. I never thought losing that one thing could hurt me more then anything.

Most the time Jeff would hold me telling me everything was going to be okay. He was the first to ever to break through my wall of darkness pulling me into his world. He showed me how to smile again. I had a family again but I guess things change in just a second you barely know what's happening. There was no light in my dark world.

I snapped my eyes opened and saw Darren put a arm around me and pulled me into a hug. He sighed "Don't cry". I didn't even realize I was crying. He gave me a sad smile "It's okay. I'm here for you".

Those last words had broken through my dark barrier. Darren, the Fox Fallen, had just entered my world pulling me out of the darkness.

I cried even harder into his chest. I held onto his shirt like a child. In only a day or two this person had broken through to me. He acually cared for me.....I could feel it.

Mom smiled "I see you found your protecter?". I shrugged "You mean Darren?". She nodded "Yes..". I looked at her "Why do I need to be protected?". She smiled and patted my head "You'll know when the time is right....". Then everything turned black.

-end dream-

(Reth POV)

I was able to limp back to the hide out. I reproted my incounter to Ashton who was furious. I went to my room to clean up my wounds. Damn it I almost had her but then he had to show up and protect her. I was so close damn it.

When I finished cleaning up my cuts I laid in bed. I rolled onto my side and heard a crumbling sound. I pulled out a old looking picture thing. Then I just remembered I took it from Jade. I carefully unfolded it and rolled onto my back and held the picture to the light.

The second I saw the picture my breath got caught in my throat and my heart dropped. T-This picture was of.......my family. I-I was even there a-and my sister. My parents too. B-but how did Jade get this? My home was burned down to the ground.....everything was lost unless s-she was my........sister.
