:::Drew's POV:::
I stared at Emma laying hooked lifelessly to the machines making her breathe and keeping her heart pumping. She looked like she was sleeping kind of but I knew the truth. The girl of my dreams, and mother of my child was laying practically dead in front of me.
"I'll give you a moment." The doctor said leaving me alone in the oddly chilled room.
I took and seat near Emma's bed and touched her hand lightly. "I can't believe this Emma." I spoke softly. "I really don't know what I'm supposed to do. Why didn't you tell me you knew you might not make it? How am I supposed to raise him by myself? That wasn't the plan. I mean sure we didn't have a real plan, but what we did have included us both." I let tears run down my face. "I picture him growing up and us getting married someday. Emma I need you, I've never needed anyone as much as I need you right now. Please wake up and tell me what I'm supposed to do. I need you!" I felt a hand on my shoulder and I looked up into the eyes of my best friend.
Wes sighed and cleared his throat. "I'm so sorry."
"She's not dead Wes." I said coldly.
"Man, you can't leave her on the machines forever. She's not breathing on her own Drew. You need to let her go. This is selfish." He said softly looking down at Emma.
"There's a five percent chance she'll make it Wes, and if I don't take that chance I'm a killer. She can pull through I just know it. I can feel it." I said confidently.
"Drew it's going to cost so much to-" I cut him off.
"I don't care how much it costs Wes! This is my choice and I don't care what you say." I snapped.
He put his hands up in surrender. "Alright, I'm with you a hundred percent. You aren't alone in this."
"Wes I appreciate that, but I think I need to be alone." I said after a moment.
He nodded as he slid back to the door. "Take as long as you need. I'll be here when you need me man."
As soon as he was gone I broke down sobbing again clutching onto Emma's lifeless hand. "I don't understand what I've done wrong to deserve this. Please just wake up, I can't do it without you!"
:::Wes's POV:::
As I left Drew in the room that day I heard him yelling at Emma like she could hear him. He doesn't get that she's never going to wake up. Five percent is as good as dead. I took Patience home and she cried all night in my arms about her best friend. I had things running through my mind until I finally blurted it out.
"You said Emma knew she might die?" I asked.
"She knew it was a strong possibility." She nodded against my chest.
"Why did she keep the baby then?" I asked. "She didn't even think Drew'd be around so what was she going to do?"
"She made me the godmother and I said I'd take care of him, and if I couldn't I'd put him up for adoption and try to make sure he got a great family." She sighed as tears stopped in her eyes. "She's not waking up is she?"
"It's highly unlikely Patience." I said honestly.
"What's Drew going to do?" She asked.
I shook my head unsure. "I, I don't know." Then for the first time in a very long time I bowed my head in defeat and tears trickled down my face. I cried for Emma, for Drew, for Patience, and for that baby that was going to grow up without a mom most likely.
:::Drew's POV:::
The next week was a blur of different rooms in the hospital, and sleepless nights at home. Emma was still in a lifeless coma hooked to life support. I go see her everyday and put fresh roses in her room. Apparently what happened was she had a hemorrhaging from the muscles rupturing or tears in her uterus, which made for uncontrollable bleeding, and since she was anemic she coded.
I was in my lonely apartment listening to the now common sound of my son bawling in his pack and play. He came home five days ago and he doesn't sleep through the night. He can tell I'm tense when I hold him so he cries, but if I put him down he's lonely and cries. I wish I knew what to do!
"I sorry!" I screamed losing it. "I don't know what you want!"
There was a moment of pure silence and then he started crying again. I joined him this time though. I put my back against the wall and slid down to the floor with my head in my hands as I lost it. How am I even supposed to do this? I can't take care of myself let alone a baby.
After a long cry I stood on my feet and crossed to look down at Lyric. He was laying on his back looking up at me without a sound. "I'm sorry I yelled." I said softly. I was still scared to touch him fearing I'd scare him or make him cry again. "It's going to be alright buddy. I'll make it alright somehow." I sighed.
