Melanie’s Pov

I ran as fast as I could to get out of the crowd, I ran through the doors leading into the hall, finding the nearest bathroom and hiding myself in one of the cubicles and locking it. ‘I can’t believe April told the entire school about my crush on Erik,’ I was mad at her but I couldn’t hold the tears anymore. I continued to cry, even when I heard the bathroom door open and close.  “Melanie?” It was April, who sounded concerned.

“Go away April,” I said through my sobs.

“Melanie plea-,”

"Just go,” I cut her off, it sounded like April was going to say something but all I heard was her sigh and the sound of the door opening and closing once again. I knew I couldn’t stay mad at her forever, but I needed space. I just sat in the cubical and cried for ages.

Mari's Pov

I had no idea where I was going; I stopped running and leaned against a tree close by. My stomach ached with pain, slowly sinking to the ground, breathing heavily. The sounds of birds and the wind was peaceful, making me feel relaxed. There was a flower in my vision that looked lifeless, I crawled over and picked it up, “poor little flower,” I smiled, sadly. I was about to drop it, but I noticed little sparkles hovering around the flower. Next thing I knew I was blinded by a huge light, I covered my eyes with my spare hand, I looked back at the flower again. I gasped, the lifeless flower was replaced with a beautiful flower with bright yellow petals. “What the fuck?”

Dropping the flower and standing up, I ran back towards the buildings, noticing the crowd had scattered. Trying not to bring any attention to myself, I slid through the doors, leading me into the hall, which was completely empty. I entered the bathroom and looked in the mirror, “Oh for fuck sake,” I grumbled, looking at my reflection, “I look like a ghost.”

My hair was a mess from running, and my face was pale, having not the slightest bit of colour on it. In the middle of trying to fix my hair, I heard someone sobbing, from inside one of the cubicles.  “Mel? Is that you?” I asked uncertain. The sobbing stopped as the door of the cubical flung open, it was Melanie. Her face was red and I could tell she had been crying, “Oh hey, Mari,”  she said to me, sadness within her voice.

“Are you okay?” I asked her with concern.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” she replied as she wiped her face with her sleeve. She smiled at me, which turned into a frown, “What’s wrong with you? You like you have seen the dead come back to life,” she said, looking at me strangely.

‘She had to use that term didn’t she?’ I thought to myself before replying. “Mel, can I tell you something?” I asked, not sure if she would laugh at me for what I was about to tell her.

“Yeah of course,” Melanie smiled.

I took a deep breath, “After you took off, I also left, I started to lose my breath, so I sat down,” I explained, “I noticed a dead flower and picked it up, when I was about to drop it, sparkles were hovering over it.”

“So? What’s your point?” Melanie looked puzzled.

“The point is there was a bright light, when I looked back, it was healthy and had bright yellow petals.” I finished before taking another breath.

Melanie just stared at me for a while, with a concerned look on her face, “Are you sick? I mean are you sure you didn’t imagine it? Because that’s unbelievable.” Melanie smirked at me.

“I knew it, you think I’m insane.” I stormed out of the bathroom, very annoyed and reached my locker that I was given earlier. I grabbed my bag and put it over my shoulder, I headed for the doors that lead outside.

“Mari! Wait up! I didn’t mean it like that,” I heard Melanie call me, but I just ignored her and went outside. Running down the steps, I bumped into someone, nearly knocking us over. “We really need to stop meeting like this, Mari,” Aish smiled amused, which faded, probably because he could see the irritation all over my face. “Hey, what’s wrong?” he asked me.

“Nothing, I’m going for a walk,” I mumbled as I walked past him.

“But school isn’t over yet!” Aish tried to explain, but I ignored him and kept walking, reaching a path into a forest.
