Ten Years Later...

Mari's Pov

"But it's my birthday, can I have one day off school, Pleaseeeee?" I looked pleadingly into my older brother's bright green eyes.

"Mari-Anna, what am I going to do with you?" he smiled coyly and shook his head.

"So...." the word hung in the air for a few moments, before William answered.

"Fineee," he surrendered, "one day off school won't hurt."

I ran towards him giving him a big hug. "Okay then," he said hugging her back, awkwardly.

"Thank you," I let him go and ran upstairs cheerfully, closing the door to my room. After making sure my room was tidy, I pulled out one of my favourite stories, 'Faerie Tales.' I made myself comfortable on my big double bed and began to read, my mother used to read it to me when I was little, before my parents completely disappeared, no where to be found.

Down stairs the phone rang, "Do you want me to get that, bro?" I yelled downstairs to William.

"No, that's okay, I've got it," he responded.

I was curious enough to leave my room, trying not to make a sound and knelled on the floor to hear what was going on. I could just hear my brother, faintly talking on the phone. "What do you mean?!" William started to raise his voice. Shocked, I frowned; I have never heard him raise his voice that loud before.

"I understand, yes, okay," I let out a breath, "When did I hold that in?" I asked myself.

"MARI!" William called me, very loudly.

"Coming!" I answered, already halfway down the stairs, when I arrived at the foot of the stairs, I nervously walked up to my older brother, who was clenching his fists that his knuckles were white, nearly breaking the phone. "Will? Is everything alright?" I asked anxiously.

"It will be, the phone is for you." He turned and handed me the phone before he walked into the lounge. I stood in the hallway, putting the phone up to my ear.

"Hello?" I whispered.

"Happy birthday Mari," a cheerful boy on the other end, responded. I sighed with relief.

"Thank you, Jack," I said blissfully.

"You're welcome," there was a short silence, "I have some bad news," Jack replied faintly.

'Uh oh what happened?' I thought, worried. "What is it cuz?" I asked suddenly feeling scared.

"You have to move in with your brother for a while," Jack answered trying not to laugh.

"Ha ha ha, you're so funny.....NOT!" I sarcastically replied.

All the humour disappeared from his voice, "I'm being serious Mari."

"I don't understand," my voice became unhappy and confused, "Why?"

"You're parents aren't home yet and told Uncle Robert to tell you but he asked me to do it."

I knew he was lying, I haven't heard from my parents in years. Still I said, "Fine," surrendering, "I'll start packing." I politely said goodbye to Jack, before slamming the phone down and ran upstairs, slamming my door. Sobbing into my pillow, I could still hear my brother's faint footsteps before coming to a stop at my door.

"GO AWAY!" I yelled, through the tears.

"Mari, I'm not happy about this either, but look at the bright side," I could feel his smile, "you get to hang out with Mindy." William cheerfully said.
