James turns to leave, and I click the button. We walk out of the office and then out of the building. “Did you get it?”, James asks me. I nod and he awkwardly pats me on the back. We walk to the police station. James walks up to the man at the desk and hesitates before he clears his throat. The cop looks at him and asks, “How may I help you?”
“I think I may know what happened to Meyer Manor. You know, that house that burned down a few years ago, and the family disappeared?” The cop nods and walks off. I glance over at Sam and he seems a little uncomfortable. I think we all do. The cop comes back with another man who says, “Follow me.” The three of us follow him and he puts each of us into interview rooms.
I sit in this cold room for a while before he comes in. “My name is Detective Stewart. You and your friends know something about the Meyer tragedy?” I nod. “My half-brother James is pretty sure it was his step dad.” The detective looks bored. “Why would he think that?” “James’ brother was killed in a bus accident. Mr. Meyer was the one driving the bus. James’ step dad was missing the entire day that the Meyer’s house burned down. And we questioned his dad about it and he sounded very suspicious.”
“Do you have any proof that it may be him.” The detective seems to care a bit more than he did when he first entered. “I got a recording of his step dad basically saying he burned down the house and a picture.” He looks confused. “What kind of picture.”, he asks. I pull out the two pictures and point to the first one. “This came from an article about Mr. Meyer. He got this gun from Europe before they stopped making them a year before he went missing. He carved his wife’s initials on the gun.”
I show him the next picture. “James’ step dad has the exact same gun hanging in his room, with the same initials on it. See there are the initials.” I pull out my phone and play him the recording of James’ step dad basically confessing. The detective smiles. “I am going to need to take these pictures and your phone for proof. I will make a copy of the recording and bring your phone back after that I will bring him in. What’s his name?” “Terry Hulsey.”
