"You are not getting me in there," I attempted to scream at Jess.
It was pretty hard since it was one in the morning and we were trying to sneak into my mother's house.
Jess shot me a look and whispered in response, "We need that letter."
"No we don't. I know Ethan and that letter has nothing important in it."
"Juliette please." She took a deep breath. "If there is nothing important in that letter then...I'll give up on you and Ethan."
I looked at Jess with wide eyes. I wanted to say that we could go in but at the same time, I didn't want her to give up on me and Ethan.
"Um..." I finally said.
Jess grabbed my arm and dragged me to the door. After she knocked a man came to the door.
"Patrick?" I asked in disbelief. Paul's dad stood in the doorway of my house. His hair was a mess and he was only in his boxers. The worst part was that he had lipstick smeared across his top lip. I didn't even want to think about what he and my mother were doing before we came.
"Oh, look who it is, the girl who broke my son's heart," Patrick responded. Then he slammed the door in our face.
Jess said one word, "Wow."
"I know."
The two of us then started to laugh. I still don't know why we started laughing but I think it had something to do with the fact that my mother was sleeping with my ex's dad. Or that I was about to break into my own house. The two of us sat down on the steps of the house for twenty minutes so we could be sure that they were asleep. Then I walked us to a window.
"This window is always unlocked," I said before lifting it up.
We climbed into the house and sneaked upstairs. At the top of the stairs, in between my room, my sister's room, and my mother's room, a muffled moan came from my mother's room.
"Ew," I said.
Jess grabbed my arm and pulled me into my room. "Shut up. Now tell me where you put the letter."
I walked over to my closet and bent down. I was sure that the letter fell out of the box when we moved. I looked around. "It's not here," I whispered.
"What?"
"I think it's at Layla's."
"Ugh." Jess pulled out her phone and dialed a number. "Hey. Can Juliette and I come over?...Cool, see you then."
"Juliette Emily Foster," a voice that sounded like my mother said.
"Shoot!" Jess and I said at the same time.

"Why are you here?" Mother asked.
Jess spoke, "We told you. Juliette needs something."
"What did you need?"
I scanned my mind for everything that was in my closet still. I sighed, there was only one thing left in my closet. My voice very squeaky, I said, "Condoms. I needed condoms."
My mother's eyes lit up. "You lost your virginity. I'm so proud." Jess and I gave each other a "seriously" look. "I'll go get you a bag. Be right back."
When my mother walked upstairs I told Jess, "Go. Now. Run."
The two of us sprinted out of the house to my truck. We hurried and left the neighborhood. We were on our way to Layla's.
