"Hello? This is Jade Wong. I'm from STC? Somebody gave me this number on Monday and told me to call it." I said.
"Hello, Jade. yi go hi heng gong long bao him, you mei ho yi bong do lei? (This is Hong Kong Dragon's insurance, how can I help you?)" A woman on the other side answered.
"Give me the phone, Phoebe." A familiar voice said on the other side of the phone, and as I waited patiently, I heard the phone get transferred to another person, and the voice spoke again. "Hello, Miss Jade. I suppose you got my little gift?"
"Sure, I did. It's a girl's dream to get a bloody knife as a present. Thank you very much!" I drawled sarcastically. "Cut the crap, Mr Assassin. I was just attacked by five men who were working under some gui, I'm guessing a gui lou (ghost-man, hong kong slang for foreigner). Two of them looked like they were on Kobra-venom, while the leader straight up teleported and disappeared. Not to mention the fact that everything I think ends up being heard and I'm suddenly a telekinetic."
"Your abilities have manifested so quickly?" He said, shocked. "That's surprising. None of our other test subjects have evolved and mutated so quickly. How so, Miss Jade?"
"I'm not telling you anything more than that. I mean, I don't even know your name! All I know is that you knocked me and my entire class out and exposed us to some kind of chemical, and now I'm a freak show right out of a comic book." I ranted. "I called for answers. Next time I get attacked by some heavily tattooed ogres, I might not be so lucky, and end up being harvested by those creeps."
I heard a low chuckle on the other side of the phone. "Your words never fail me, Jade. Fine. My name is Chase, Chase Hunt. And yes, you will receive answers. You are a test subject, as is the rest of your class. We were searching for a class of youngsters that would be innovative and have the adaptability to evolve. You throwing the shoe at me and your class attempting to fight me confirmed your class as our test subjects, and we exposed you to a mutagen, Trial Theta."
"Trial Theta? That means we were the 8th trial! So there are 7 other classes out there with mutations like me? Does that mean my entire class is like me? Mutated?"
"Yes and no. Yes, the type of gas you were exposed to was the 8th version, but you are actually only the third trial. My colleagues and I were the second trials, while the first trial... Well, you saw the result of that yourself tonight."
"And why do I remember and no one else does?" I asked.
"Firstly, I chose you to be our liaison with your class due to the fact that you were the one that initiated the attack against me, and the fact that you stabbed me. It still hurts, thanks for asking."
"You're welcome."
"Also, it may be due to your mental abilities. The memory-altering serum, similar to the Abnegation serum in Divergent, does not work to those whose brain chemistry was affected by any type of mutation. So you, as a telepath, will remember everything we tried to make you forget. And your job is to find out which ones in your class have been affected and how."
"Wait. You mean that some people might not have been affected? And you read teen fiction?"
"We don't know. Some people's DNA rejects the foreign mutagen. This is the first time we did a trial on children, because we think that the younger we insert the foreign mutagen, the more it may evolve and the more powerful you guys may become. Also, Divergent is a perfectly good series."
"And why, exactly, are you doing this? And don't just say scientific research. No one just slides off a stab in the back for scientific research and doesn't get salty. How old even are you? Why are you wasting your time reading Divergent? The movie sucks."
