EPISODE 4: LEGEND OF SHADOW LAKE - THE WATER WANTS MY BLOOD

The water was warmer than I had expected, but it felt good. I jumped in off the rocks for maybe the tenth time in the last fifteen minutes. I hit the water in streamline and touched the soft, but ice cold sand on the bottom with my toes.

I pushed myself to the surface and swam over to a rock. The rock was completely submerged, but low enough I could lay on it and breath just fine. "Seriously? I mean, I know this is a makeup class, but come on. This is fun!" I called to my teammates sitting on the beach.

Jade wasn't in a swimsuit and neither was Suri. Fang was in swim trunks, but was still wearing a tee-shirt and the same went for Shadow. Violet was wearing board shorts and a swimsuit top, but hadn't joined me in the water.

None said anything, but after a seconds pause Violet got up. She ran in and swam out to me. "You're right. Might as well have fun with this." She said with a bright smile.

I had a feeling Violet and I would be good friends. We spent the rest of the afternoon, until just after sundown, swimming together. Fang had started three fires, one for each team of partners.

"Hey, as much as I like the arrangements I think we should limit it to one fire from now on. The point of this is team bonding." I said as Fang handed me a towel. I wrapped up in it and sat down.

"Maybe your right." Fang answered. "But how about we leave it for now." I nodded in agreement. "Hungry?" He asked.

"Starving." I replied. Fang smiled and went to get the food. We had decided that Fang and Shadow would share a tent, Violet and I would share a tent, and Suri and Jade would share a tent since they both wanted to put in an early night.

We all ate in silence and finished around the same time. "I think I'm going to get some sleep." I stood up and headed for my tent. The tent was dark gray and big enough to stand up in, as were the other two, and was the farthest from the entrance. The boy's was the closest and the other was in the middle.

Violet followed me in. "So, you want the left or right?" She asked.

"I'll take the right." It was the side opposite of the entrance to the cove.

"Sure." We both fell silent as we got ready for bed. I sat down on the cot and looked at her. She sat on her own.

"So, you've been going to the academy for a little over a month. What do you think of it?" Violet asked. I moved so I was sitting crisscross.

"It's odd, but exciting. I enjoy it there." I replied.

"Good. I am curious: why did you enter the entry competition?" Violet copied my position but leaned forward, resting her elbows on her knees.

"I'm not really sure. Well, I suppose it was my chance to get out." I didn't really want to tell her my back story.

"Get out? Get out of where?" Violet asked. She sat up. I pulled my knees to my chest and sighed.

"Get out of the orphanage." I muttered.

"Your an orphan? I'm sorry." Violet said. I smiled, even though I wanted to curl up and shut down.

"Not sure, actually. I was abandoned on the steps of an orphanage when I was only a year old. The only thing I have from my parents in this." I pulled my necklace out of my shirt. I never took it off and it always stayed on a chain around my neck. There was a single charm on it: it was a dragon curled around a blue gem. The wings of the dragon had a hook that connected to the chain. The gem had never shifted and was completely locked in. They were impossible to separate.
