chapter 1 - the populars
"congrats on being one of the cool kids in high school,
too bad about the rest of your life though"

"kenz, they are coming here, oh my god," i could hear brynn's excited whisper as she hyperventilated beside me while i slammed my locker shut. i rolled my eyes impatiently. brynn was a great friend, but sometimes she just loves overreacting. wait, let me guess. maybe britney spears is walking down the hallways. nope. i whirled around to see none other than a bunch of jocks and cheerleaders strutting down the hall.
"what's so exciting?" i nudged her with my elbow while she patted her hair down.
"the populars! do i look okay? do you think johnny will notice me?" brynn's hands fluttered to her heart as she faked a cardiac arrest.
johnny. i don't even personally know him, but i hated his name already. brynn had to nag his name a million times into my ear each day, and i suspected an ear cancer was making its way into me already.
"yes, brynn dear, you are so beautiful that johnny would fall head over heels for you just like how he does every single day," i muttered, flinching as a fist landed on me. this petit girl has muscles.
i was momentarily distracted when the air around me tensed up as everyone moved away, pressing themselves along the lockers. i pursed my lips, sighing in exasperation. not again. i have been in college a for around a few weeks already but i still don't get it.
whenever the gang of populars, as everyone liked to call them, walked down the hall, everyone would develop a sudden interest in sticking themselves against their locker doors as flatly as possible. i glared at the girl in front of me as she tried to squash me into a pancake.
honestly, the populars were just divided into two groups. the hair extensions and the big muscles. one day, i swear, our school needs to organise a big evacuation plan and clean the whole school up because all the golden wisps of hair flying around the hallway could actually cause lung cancer if anyone inhaled them. i resisted the urge to roll my eyes again as one of them flicked her hair. hair flicking was probably going to become the next new trend. and their skirts. if they were any shorter, their botox-filled butts would be exposed.
don't even get me started on the jocks. their biggest achievement is brushing their hair a billion times each day without fail. kinda reminds me of lockhart from harry potter, minus the sparkling white teeth. i bet their muscles contains more cells than their brains, after all their brains are tinier than peas. if they weren't such bubble heads, i would have expressed my concern towards their shockingly low iq.
oh, and another thing i find hilarious. the most popular cheerleader (simpler meaning - the one with the longest legs) nadia is dating the most popular jock, johnny orlando (brynn does not only overreact, she also has bad taste). let's pause here and talk about how downright cliche this is. the most popular girl always dates the most popular guy and together they rise above the whole school (by spreading stupidity).
i always wondered why people can't see through their layers of good looks and actually think about their personalities. i shook my head as a few sophomores in front of me chattered endlessly about the jocks.
"do you think johnny likes shorter skirts?" hearing his name for the millionth time, i scanned the crowds for the owner of this damned name. there he was, the boy walking down the hall with a bored look on his face. i could spot him from miles away. those sea green eyes and tousled golden hair were just too prominent.
"obviously, look at nadia," one of them whispered back while i searched the crowd for the queen bee. she stood proudly beside johnny, her manicured nails latched around his arm like a leech, and her tanned legs on full display. i wrinkled my nose. if i were a boy, i would rather find a girl who dresses normally instead of one who probably wears mini skirts even in winter.
curiosity piqued, i leaned forward as i tried to listen out for more juicy gossip.
"do you think he will like me?" the blonde one directly in front of me asked anxiously as she adjusted her clothes. i looked down. the typical style of dressing the cheerleaders loved. a tight crop top, paired with a tiny skirt.
"sure, johnny will totally love your short legs. if you want him to notice you, get longer legs like nadia. you can try becoming an astronaut. i heard it helps to increase your height," i murmured, smiling innocently as the girl turned back to glare at me. oops.
"sorry, ignore her, she's just jealous," beside me, brynn smiled amicably, giving a small wave, "i can join you guys, though," she winked at me.
jealous? sure. i snorted as i turned away. trust brynn to come up with such a terrible excuse.
"can we go now, please? my eyes hurt from all the glow they are giving," i put my hands up to shield my eyes mockingly as i tugged on brynn.
"nope, just let me look at them one last time," she begged, pushing through the crowd again.
"please?" i tried giving her my puppy eyes, which seem to work on maddie, but brynn just stared at me blankly as she tapped on my nose.
"sorry, sweetie, but puppy eyes don't work on me," i pouted as she turned around again.
"so you are going to leave me alone," i glowered at her, changing my tactic, but she just laughed it off.
"yup, you can get a chance to find your inner self, which is being a loner," brynn chortled as she teased me in a sing song voice.
i crossed my arms over my chest as i stared at her back disappearing into the crowd.
"they are so stupid, why would you like johnny?" i muttered grouchily as i pushed through the crowds after brynn, trying to find my way to the classroom, unlike the others who are scrambling to get a better look at the populars.
"he isn't stupid! his score is currently the highest in the whole school! he's so perfect, who wouldn't like him?" a girl beside me gushed.
"me," i answered immediately, finally getting to breathe. little did i know.
