chapter 42 - watery confession

"one look and you have me blushing"

k e n z i e

I went to a boring annual gala ball.

I was ditched by my partner.

I talked to Johnny (after ignoring him for a whole day).

This perfectly terrible night couldn't get worse, right?

News flash. It actually could. And when the bad luck hits me, it sends me flying into the wall, through the bricks and all the way up to the cold, sad moon.

I could only watch as I, together with my five inches high heels and ballgown, tumbled off the railing and smacked headfirst into the cold water.

The first thing that hit me was that it was frightfully cold. Especially since the fabric covering me could barely provide any warmth, I was shivering.

Brynn and Lauren's hysterical whispers traveled down to me as they tittered upstairs. I could hear Annie calming them down. Great, they should be hysterical. I'll see how hysterical they can be when I decide on my murder weapon.

I was just about to hitch the ballgown up and climb out of the pool (to kill Lauren), when a big splash behind me knocked me off my feet and into the pool again.

Without a doubt, when I finally resurfaced, I was fuming mad. This ballgown was ruined definitely, and I probably looked like a banshee with all those mascara flowing down my cheeks.

"Kenzie! Are you alright?" I came face to face with a frantic Johnny, who was still looking devilishly gorgeous (poor me) even after he took a dip in the pool.

I watched, entranced, as rivulets of water flowed down from his golden brown hair and seeped slowly into his dress shirt. His green eyes looked deeper than ever under the moon. I could feel heat rising into my cheeks even though it was still freezing cold.

I only realized I was staring when my hands warmed suddenly. Surprised, I looked down to see Johnny blowing on my hands softly, his warm breath melting my frozen fingers bit by bit. My hands were not the only things melting, I could feel my whole body longing to press into his warm one. Flushing at this absurd thought, I tried to pull back my hands.

"You must be cold, don't resist," Johnny chided as he removed his jacket and draped it over my shoulders lightly, while holding my palms in his and rubbing them.

That's when I noticed something that I missed because I was busy ogling him. What in the world was Johnny doing in the pool? I narrowed my eyes.

"Johnny, what the hell are you doing here?" I demanded, crossing my arms as he looked up, confused.

"What do you mean? I'm attending the gala ball too," he asked, cocking his head to one side, looking exceedingly like a tiny bird. I stifled the laugh building up in my throat.

Tonight suddenly seemed a million times better. But first, I had to deal with him.

Looking at Johnny carefully, I asked loftily, "Since I last checked, the pool is accessible via a flight of stairs behind you. Now I'm wondering what in the world possessed you to jump down to join me?"

I watched on in amusement as a shade of dark pink colored his cheeks. I knew it! He did not even think of using the stairs! An IQ this high was wasted just like this. Shaking my head, I couldn't help but let a chuckle escape from my lips.
