CHIKLIT/ROMANCE
"BULL! You still love that useless prick!"
"Harley!" I cry, "It's not him that I want! I lo-"
He punches the wall, forcing my favorite memory to shatter across the floor, "I'm going to kill him!"
Haunted by her memories, Liana...
I stared in disbelief as James lay unconscious on the floor.
Officer Powell lowered his gun and nodded towards the man standing in the doorway and said, "Everything is ready sir."
"Good. We need to get out of here before we are discovered."

I swiftly scooped Mary Lou into my arms and held her tightly as possible. Our wet cheeks were pressed against one another. I swear she was comforting me more than I was comforting her.
I stared into the eyes of a man I had never seen before; a man that I didn't know whether he was a friend or enemy because he bared no expression upon his face. I looked him up and down trying to find something - anything that would show he was not going to murder us. He had dark-brown eyes and black- braided hair perfectly woven against his narrow scalp. His nose was rounded at the tips and on the left side of his nostril was a large scar. The scar trailed into his coarse beard. For a brief second, I wondered what was the cause of the creepy scar, but the longer I looked I realized there was another one trailing through a tattoo of the Porto Rico Flag on his forearm. The man was tall and slinky, but obviously, his small frame didn't stop him from being strong and powerful.
As I stared at the details on his tattoo, the man began to speak to me in a rushed tone, "Liana, my name is Rodríguez. I am here to take you to my boss. We have two minutes to get you safely out of the building before James's men track us down."
Although his face was emotionless, he spoke so fast it took me several seconds to process what he was saying. I couldn't think. I couldn't respond. I just stared back and for the between the man and James's pale face and lifeless body. I attempted to remain calm as I stared at James's body. I noticed James's head wasn't bleeding from the back unlike Earl had been. I also noticed James's eyes were peacefully closed and not staring into the unknown distant world. I watched carefully...and then it happened. There was tiny movement from his chest.
James was still alive.
I breathed a sigh of relief. I couldn't handle seeing another man dead, even after James had just held me at gunpoint. The other reason I felt halfway thankful James was still breathing...he had shown us a small part of the man I once knew.
"Rodríguez, James...he was going to let us go," I said as I continued to stare towards his body on the dirty cement floor.
Rodríguez continued to speak in a rushed manner, "Liana, James doesn't have it in him to do such a thing. He would have shot you the moment you left this room."
